I'd recommend a good pad for the 870 too, but my preference is for the Pachmayr Old English Decelerator. I'd also suggest you try a few ounces of lead ... like something
between a half-pound and a pound in the butt stock. Most 870's are nose-heavy, the additional weight in the back will help give it a better balance between the hands, will reduce the felt recoil ... and who cares about a little extra weight when duck hunting anyways ... it's not like it's an upland gun. I used a so-weighted 870 as a "quail gun" when in Cuba. I took it along primarily as a waterfowl gun, but with a Skeet choke it worked great on Bobwhites. Swung like a dream. Still using it here with the weighted stock for waterfowl. Prefer it over my other guns I could use, including an O/U and a pair of Beretta 391 auto-loaders.
