Can you recommend a truck for me? List the pros and cons.

Same diff - impossible without more info. Do some searching around the shotgun forum - you'll get no good (ie: meaningful) answers with this post.

Browning BPS if you are looking for a pump, Benelli M2 Field if you are looking for a semi, Browning Citori or Beretta something or other if you are looking for an Over/Under, Remington 870 Express if you are looking for a fence post. I chose to recommend these guns because they are what I like most recommendations you are going to get will be founded on what other people like, go shoulder a few and find out what you like.

I would never recommend an 870 Express

Agreed. But I have an old Wingmaster that I wouldn't trade for love or money.

The new Remingtons are just a shadow of waht they used to be. Cheap steel that rusts with a damp weather forecast; wood laminate that expands and jams the action when it's wet; slides that bend and distort from the slightest mis-alignment or pressure.

It's a shame.

Everybody needs to relax a little.

And you, alexp, need to tell us a little of what you want this shotgun to do well. Trap? Waterfowl? Grouse? Skeet? Coyotes? IPSC 3-Gun? USPSA Multigun? Sporting Clays? Injured animal euthanasia? Different jobs call for different tools. If you specify the job(s) you want the shotgun to do, members will be tripping over themselves to post their recommendation in your thread.

What do you want your shotgun for?

Let's go easy on the new member. There's no such thing as a dumb question but the same can't be said about some answers. ;)

Alex, it would help if you let us know a couple of things. The first is what you wanted to do with the gun. Hunt? Upland or waterfowl? Clay targets? Three-gun? Zombies?

The second is how much you want to spend. You can buy a serviceable shotgun for $300 or you can spend well north of $100,000 on a high-end gun.

The shotgun I've recommended to more shooters than anything else is the Beretta 391 semi-automatic in 12 gauge. Good for clays and waterfowl, acceptable for upland hunting but not as good for "tactical shotgunning." It is a reliable, respected shotgun that can do just about everything. I see more of these guns on the clay ranges than all other semi-auto makes combined.

The recommendation of the Benelli M2 make earlier is also a good one but it's more of a hunting gun, has heavier recoil due to its action type and isn't as reliable with as wide a range of shells as the Beretta.

The best thing to do is not to rush, look around, ask questions and find the gun that is right for you.

590 is an amazing shotgun, i own one with a heatshield, amazing gun i use it for sporting clays. Price was also GREAT $475, thanks for posting eg23

My favourite partridge (ruffed grouse) guns are my 28 gauge Franchi 48 AL and 28 gauge AYA Model 3A.Great gauge and shotguns in the uplands.

You will need 9 specialty shotguns to start and add a new one every new species or shooting sport you take up.

You left out turkey and slug gun. You're up to 10 guns now.

We're a facetious, sarcastic bunch here, in case you haven't noticed.

For a hunting and clays gun, find a pump you like and then get a specialty barrel or two if you think you need it.

my new(er) 870 express (1 year old) has functioned flawlessly with anyting i put in it for several thousand rounds...my buddy just bought an 870 tactical as well and it also works great. these shotguns can take a beating and still function properly and reliably.

See what is on the fireing line next time at range. Ask about the gun & try it for fit. Lots of guys will let you shoot there gun, so this is win all the way. Fit is Very important. Ask a good shooter if he/she will point out fit pointers to you. Above all take your time & have fun. AJ
