What Should Be My First Purchase With PAL?

Hey guys, as of today my PAL application has been processed! :dancingbanana:
I'm not sure what my first firearm should be however, and was wondering if you gentlemen/ladies had any suggestions.
I'm comfortable with firearms so I think any calibre should be fine! I have been saving up ever since I sent in for my PAL, and if I stretch the dollar enough I might be able to purchase two guns. I've already got my eye on an SKS, just because of the cheap ammo - I have a feeling I'm gonna want to be shooting as much as possible.
I'm looking at getting into hunting with a firearm (I already bowhunt a bit) so I was thinking my second purchase could be a .270 or something similar - not overkill on a deer, yet able to put down an elk or moose with a good shot.
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
 
Agree on the 10/22 . Everyone should have one of those . If you're going to be shooting surplus 7.62 try and get a used CZ858 , can't go wrong with it .
 
Id say if you plan on putting an aftermarket parts on the 10/22 go for it otherwise get a remington 597(more accurate out of the box). If you like bolt actions get a Savage MkII .22 (or a used Cooey model 60 or model 600). Or buy something you've always wanted, but youre going to want to shoot lots so a .22 would be cheaper to start off
 
Agree on the Ruger 10-22... can't go wrong with that. If you're looking into hunting look at a savage as suggested, Remington 700 or any number of others. SKS can be fun too... but mine didn't really turn my crank... sold it.
 
Wow thanks everyone! I agree very strongly with the .22 and 10/22 suggestions - a must have for anyone who shoots a lot. I already have an old Cooey .22 which I inherited from my grandpa before he passed, and I do put a lot of rounds through it whenever I get the chance. So now I'm looking at the sks and the Savage 7-08. Next time I'm out shopping I'll see if I can put one on layaway until my license arrives.

You need to decide what your primary use will be. Hunting or target shooting. Cheap 7.62 x 39 ammo isn't going to last forever either. An SKS can take deer, but not elk or moose. So if hunting is your main interest go with the scoped, bolt action, .270. You'll want to think about reloading as well. Factory ammo gets expensive in a hurry.

A ruger 10/22---> archangel kit
One of those keltec sub 2000---> stuff from red lion
And a Mossberg 12 gauge, either the SPX or the tactical tri rail <-- leaning towards this one
long range buy (or wish)---> something 223 cal.
 
That's almost like asking "What should I get for a first car?" But, if you don't have a whole lot of experience shooting, a .22 is a must. You can learn proper gun control (no, Wendy, don't get yore britches wet, I mean REAL gun control!) and practice for peanuts. then, as others have recommended, a 7mm-08 in any of the entry-level guns. Next, a shotty - you can't go wrong with the 870. Nothing wrong with milsurp stuff, but they do tend to be quite heavy and unwieldy for hunting, but tons of fun to shoot, though. Then, of course, it's on, and on, and on...

BTW, congrats on the PAL.
 
That too... SKS are so cheap to buy and can be transformed just as much as 10/22's



Something like this ^^^ would run about $400 without the scope (i would've left the bayonette on that one) *shrugs*
