What should I budget for a new stock, and can it be done in BC?

A friend had a lovely Dakota 76 (long action 30.06 Springfield) which I was interested in but couldn't afford. His sale fell through when the stock was broken clean through at the wrist by the Post Office. I don't know the details, but the action wasn't damaged. My question is this.. If I can pick the rifle (and broken stock) up at a reasonable price, how much would I budget for a stock? Would I be best to have one made, and is there a good stock maker anyone can recommend here?

Thanks guys. I look forward to your feedback.

Your looking at quite a bit of coin if you want one comparable to the original. on the other hand check out Boy'ds. The have walnut in addition to the laminates You can select higher grass of wood, specify the LOP and have it checkered and finished. Would or should need a bedding job when you get it, I believe the limit is $ 500 for them to export to Canada but I would surely check them out.

Check out Ralf Martini. He is in BC.

On his website he shows a repair made to the stock of a high end rifle with damage just as you describe, snapped completely off through the wrist.
I would trust any work done by him, as I don't believe he would take on the task if he didn't feel confident about the repair. Worth looking into.
While not likely to be "cheap" it would be nice to repair the original if possible.

No offence to Neilm, but if you put a Boyd's stock on a Dakota I will have to send BIGUGLYMAN over to your house to beat you with a dead fish!

"...budget for a stock..." More about how much you want to spend. Depends on what kind of stock you're looking for. Wood stock blanks can run from a few hundred to the better part of a grand, US. And those are just stock blanks. Synthetics, of course, are less. There are different grades to those too though.
