What should I get for my first precision rifle?

Starting to get into precision shooting and longer ranges. I was thinking about the Savage Precision Carbine. Looks decent and have seen some videos on youtube that support that. The Model 10 FCP in the McMillan stock also looks very interesting, they are a little more expensive, but have a longer barrel and the A5 stock.

Which one should I get?

What other rifles would be good for a beginner precision shooter? Not interested in Remingtons

And which calibre should I get? I was leaning towards the .308 as I have a couple .308s. But the .223 seems like it would be great to learn with.

I am getting into reloading shortly. If I dont some stuff for Xmas, I'll buy it myself.

And I know everyone is going to say to buy a 22 to practice with. I have already done that and am looking to move on.

I would buy a 223 over a 308.

Savage is a good place to start. How much are you lookin to spend?

A Model 12 LRPV left port in 223 with a 1 in 7" twist would be good.
 
i guess I'd be looking to spend around 1 K for a rifle. But I am willing to pay more for a product that will fit my needs better. The point I would start second guessing the price would be aroun 1300-1400.

I picked up my M12 LRPV at Cabelas last winter for $900. Watch for sales.

Edit:

Cabelas has a LRPV in 22-250 for $1189 right now.
 
Savage model 12 FTR

Read up on the Savage 12FTR. New for about $1400 and used for $850-$1000 is about right.

I have one and it is great. I shoot with a buddy who has guns that sell for 3 to 6K and the result down range is pretty much the same.

This is a factory gun that will do anything you could ask as a new shooter. Spend a grand on glass (Sightron) and $200 on a bipod (mystic precision) and you can compete with the best of them. You choose between .308 and .223. They are both available.

You can also get a custom build on a Stevens action for about the same money.

Potshots, you are on the right track. Buy a savaGe, they shoot very well for the money. 223 or 308 are both great. You can hunt with the 308 if you ever decide to otherwise there is no advantage on the range. A good savage will keep up with a sako trg which is impressive.
 
I would agree with the lrpv in 223 with a 1-7, i have had a few and they shoot great for a factory rifle. 223 is easy to load, endless options of bulletts, brass, and powder, great barrel life and can reach out from 100-900 meters. 223 for sure.
 
Thats the only other issue, I kind of wanted a mag-fed rifle. I notice most of the ones mentioned are single shot. I can see the advantage of a single shot for precision shooting though. I will have to put alot of thought into that decision i guess.

I have a few single shots and a few mag fed bolt actions.

I rarely load a mag. Its easier and faster to load one at a time. Your also not limited to what fits into the mag.

Get a single shot with a left port or duel port and you'll be laughing.
