What should I get for my first precision rifle?

I would buy a 223 over a 308.

Savage is a good place to start. How much are you lookin to spend?

A Model 12 LRPV left port in 223 with a 1 in 7" twist would be good.

I have this rifle and it is my "goto" gun for punching steel and paper out to 600 yards.

Savage LRPV Performance

Can't go wrong with Savage these days. This is from a guy who used to buy Remingtons only. (Use load at your own risk).

I took a few shots with 69 grain Sierras just to get somewhat centred on paper before the pictured target. This is my very first serious target with a Savage LRPV 1/7 twist .223 last Tuesday. These are incredible!!!!!!!!!!! Target shot at a measured 100 yards. That is a dime!

I have the Model 12 FTR .308 which is also producing excellent results.

When I shot the second shot through the rifle I thought I had a serious problem. There was only one hole. Walked up to the target and saw a slight flair indicating two. Shot the third which enlarged the hole a bit again. The fourth and fifth were probably my fault, I was quite excited.

I was shooting from a portable bench and could see just a little movement in the scope. Next time out is prone with a Sinclair bipod and a few loads to try out.

Target is the Diamond symbol in Word at 48pt.

I am really liking my remington 700p in .308 with some atrs love. It's my first 'precision' or 'long range' rifle and I really think you'd be hard pressed to beat it for the money.

When I step up to the next level it's either going to be something like a Sako TRG-22 or a full custom build ontop of my existing 700p (trued, match barrel, bottom metal, mcmilan a5 or aics) and you're easily doubling the investment at that point.

Mine is shooting well under 0.5 moa and I am *NOT* a good shooter. I am just starting out!

I'm new at this but my advice would be that pretty much any higher end factory rifle (rem 700p, savage 10fcp, tika tactical, etc) are going to be better than you out of the box. As a shooter we are the weakest link. Every shot I've messed up so far has been entirely my fault.
