Hello,
Here's whats happenings, I started out wanting a Rem 700P to go shooting at the 600 yards range with my dad. But when i looked at the prices again, I sort of winced. the rifle is starting at 1000$ everywhere, and then I need to dress her up, get her a scope, rings, and a base. so, scope = ~ over 800$, rings good ones = ~100$, base again, good ones = ~100$. Ammo is not really an issue since we are in the process of reloading.

But that is alot of money, and this would only be for the 600yard range, no fun at the other 100yard one. And when i think about what I enjoy shooting most, its usually handguns and "not" long range rifles.

So i've been thinking about leaving the long range idea on the ice for a while, sure its great, but getting my own rifle...$$$, I'll just use my dad's or put back the scope on the old .303 brit ( you'd be surprised how it shoots).

I am opting for a handgun, im sure you've noticed and been wondering where I am going, patience im coming to it. :D

I already have my own pistol, its a Springfield 1911 GI.45, great gun real fun and pretty accurate. And now I'd like something different. I've shot my mom's P226 a often, its great, but still a bit expensive. I've shot a few others also.

so here is what im thinking, since i already have a .45acp, i'd like a different caliber. a 9mm, the options are there. there are plenty of different 9mm's.

But I have a few in mind.

- Browning MakIII Hi-power (I like it, held one a few times, but never shot it)
- SIG P226 (er...price)
- CZ-75 (interesting for the price, but i find it a bit fugly)
- CZ-85 (same)
- Glock (tupperware gun? I'm not sure about it, heavy trigger?)
- Steyr M-A1 (space gun?)
- Walther P99 (looks like toy)
- S&W M&P9 (how much?)
- Springfield XD-9 (better then a glock?)
- suggestions?

How about Beretta 92? great looking and very reliable gun not too pricy either...Not to mention '92' is part of your user name :D

from your list I've owned P226, M&P and Steyr....only have M&P left. I like that gun too.:)

Since you already have a nice 1911 and is no way go back to something has ugly flame and terrible trigger, I second the idea of a Beretta 92F, beautiful gun and smooth action. If you are looking for something cheaper and CZ is a very good choice.

Can't go wrong with either Sig P226 or BHP. I own both (although the BHP is a .40) and they are some of my favorite pistols. Great fit and finish, accurate, reliable, good ergonomics - what more can you ask for.

HK USP is another good option if you want a modern polymer gun that gives up nothing in terms of quality/fit and finish to traditional metal guns.
 
I think im going to go for the Browning Hi-power. Do you guys know who has the cheapest BHP? not that norinco POS either. :)

I've seen it at Epps for a decent price, is there better?

Also, do you know if I can find a comander type hammer for this gun?

CZ 75, hard to beat at this price !! (600-625 $)

If you want something better : CZ SP 01 Shadow (around 800$)

Glock, also good deal for the price : about 600$

You can find a nice USP in 9mm about every 2-3weeks in the EE here :D

Mind you the grip is kind of wide for smaller hands.

Save that, I'd go with the p99... sure it looks like a toy... but handle one on the range... its a fun gun to shoot.

Other than that... go to the range on range night wherever you are, and try a few different ones... go with what works best.

And yes I also suggest a 9mm.

I have a USP in .45 and than I bought a 9mm 92FS just to shoot 'cheaper'

Hmm...every one or two weeks, one shooter will gave up thier HK USP?

Something in 9mm is a good idea you've had, since it is quite common and thus relatively cheap to shoot.

Although more modern pistols can be judged to be better than the Browning HiPower in various technical measures of performance, it is a classic design with a long established reputation for accuracy and reliability, and you already know you like the way it fits and feels in your hands, so you won't be going wrong.

I aim to have one myself one day so I've done a bit of looking around and find the price of the Hi-Power new from Browning dealers in Canada is pretty consistent. (If anyone knows I've overlooked a dealer anywhere who consistently offers a lower price I'd be glad to hear of it.)
 
Get a gun (doesn't really matter which) get your butt to the range and shoot the *ss off it. Think about it later.

There's a pretty good chance that even if you get THE perfect pistol, you'll sell it in a year anyway.

Unless you have a very good reason to get a .40S&W or another .45 or 10mm, there is nothing wrong with 9mm.

If you burn alot of ammo on regular basis, you may wanna look into getting a gun that would take a .22LR conversion kit. CZ and Glock have those.

HK USP, IMHO, is chunky, heavy, ugly and I liked it the least next to M&P to shoot. Some may like them, they didn't shoot good enough for me.

There are only 3 guns off of your list I'd narrow my choice down to:

CZ 75 or 85 = cheap, reliable, accurate, fun to shoot; there is SA model that looks a bit different and is an excellent shooter too.

SIG 226 = a looker, comfy, accurate, reliable and... pricy.

XD9 = good looks, accurate, reliable, comes with holster and mag pouches.

My humble 0.02 :D
 
No offense, but I am not too fond about used guns, especially via internet. I'll only buy used if its milsurp. Or if its an extreme case, then I'll buy a "new" gun used.

the CZ-75 is nice, i've held and shot it recently, its comfy and shoots well, but the gun just feels alien.

I had a crush on the P99 a while ago, but kinda grew out of it after I saw the price tag, its nice and all but I dont think it should sell for that much.

The glock is cool. but I dont like the grip on it, its not something i'd shoot every weekend.

I really have to try the Hi-power. it might be what I buy, that or a P226

P228 are prohib because of barrel length right?

yea, but sig is now sending us 229s with longer barrels from the factory

BHP is a very nice gun with comfortable grip but Sig 226 is a better gun IMO. Price wise is not much different because Questar have NIB for cheap.

You didn't give the Springfield XD much of a look, eh? For the price of the Sig you could get a new XD and a used BHP... that should put things into perspective, and the XD is an excellent pistol for feel, reliability and accuracy. I haven't heard very many people who have shot them say they don't love them. Nicer trigger than glocks. I like the feel better than the M&P, but I shoot the M&P just as well.
 
thanks Proonur, its just that i don't hear much about the XD. i was looking at it the other day, and was uncertain whether I should find it ugly or beautiful.

how's the trigger? crispy? long? short? etc.
 
You didn't try dry firing it?
I find it very useable, WAY better than a Glock's that's for sure. It is crisp, and not especially long, but just right for me. A good pistol for IPSC from what I'm told. I never hear anyone say they don't like it for shooting, in fact, i don't know where all the XD fans are, but there are plenty out there.
As far as looks go, that's in the eye of the beholder to be sure. I like it a lot, and there's a new model out now that I haven't had the chance to handle or shoot, but I look forward to it.
Most importantly, its not expensive by any standard other than Norinco's. Very reasonable in fact. I have seen them for $650 for the pistol, case and 2 mags or $700 for the holster, mag holder, 2 clips and carrying case combination. The way I look at it, you have to shoot a pistol before you buy it in order to know how it is. I wouldn't buy one I haven't shot unless it was a great deal.
