What should I get?

Hey everyone, I'm new to the restricted rifle scene. I've had my heart set on an AR15 for some time now, but I just found the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 and I like it. Its cheaper to buy and cheaper to shoot, and its still basically an AR15. Does anyone have any experience with this gun? Aside from the caliber difference, is there anything I would really miss on an AR15? Price is an issue here, since I have a wife who has to approve the purchase.

I would love to be able to shoot gophers and rabbits with an AR or an MP 15-22, but I know that's not allowed. I have looked at the Ruger SR22 and the Rem 597 Tactical. For some reason they just don't have that 'coolness' factor. I guess I'm just stubborn, I'm also a die hard John Deere guy... maybe I just want someone to tell me what I want to hear.

There is a gun range being built close to me, so I'll have a place to shoot soon. Thanks for your time guys.

SR22- more accessories (ie. 25 rd mags) available, non restricted= good for gophers
Rem 597- not a bad gun, extra mags and stuff are harder to find (i've found)
MP 15-22- fantastic gun, buddy picked one up, real nice. The restricted part is unbelievably stupid IMO
AR- expensive to feed but fun.

Personally, I'd go with the SR22 just cause I know parts are easily available and I can take it into any field anywhere and shoot gophers without getting in too much trouble

Thanks Hoffman. Where are the SR22's available in Canada? Do you have any idea what the price is? I can't believe that the MP15 22 is restricted either, do they just pick guns at random for the restricted list? Is there any way that it could ever be non-restricted?

Also, not that I'm interested in getting in trouble or doing anything illegal, but what happens if you do get caught shooting a restricted firearm on your own property or anywhere that isn't an approved range? Do they take away just THAT gun, or all of your guns AND your licence? Are there charges or fines or do you get a warning first? Can you ever get your guns/licence back if they do get taken away?

Thanks again.

Or you could wait a bit and buy this rifle.

OK so (potentially dumb) M&P 15-22 question......

Is it possible to exchange uppers with standard AR uppers?? i.e. buy a 15-22 and then swap the top end for a .223??

No, which is why it is annoying that it is restricted.

i have an sr22 and it is a great rifle. i handled the s+w 15-22 and i thought it felt cheap compared to the very solid ruger. mind you i have not shot the 15-22. just my 2 cents:)

There is no possible way for it to be restricted. It has adequate overall length and isn't a variant of any named prohib or restricted rifle. The only classification it can be is non res.

My bad. I thought it was a Remington ACR. What is it?
