What should I look for in a used Winchester 94?

There's one available at my range for $580 tax included. The only problem I could see with it is that the action was sticky (no idea if this could be fixed later on). All I know is that I could get a new Marlin 336 for the same price:

Any idea on what I should do or what I should look at to determine if the Winchester is good? Serial number maybe? Or just forget the sticky-action, used Winchester and get a Marlin?

I say get the Marlin. But it sounds like you have your heart set on a winchester.

Nah, I'm not really set on a Winchester. I just want whichever is going to be a better, more reliable gun. I don't know much about lever actions though; I thought maybe a sticky action is an easy fix.

dont listen to the nay sayer put a WTB add here and you will get a great 94 for 500$ they are like zipo ligther a true american classic

If you open the action of a Mod. 94 and you see parts that look like stamped metal instead of milled, it sure ain't worth 580$ On the other hand that kind of money may be justified for a pre-64 (milled) in very good to excellent condition.
