i'd like to know what you guys think is the best way to protect my sks wood stock. Wax? Polish? Shalack? It scratches real easily. Thanks

I think it's safe to assume that the fellow who took the time to make this thread cares. Other wise why would he have asked?

If your SKS still has the original finish, than it is Shellac. Shellac is a great product, however it's not the most durable wood finish. Especially when it's over 50 years old. I don't know of anything that will make the Shellac more durable. I can only recommend to take great care in not banging the rifle off objects.

Buy a can of Shellac for touch ups for when you do smack it off something.

ok thanks deerstalker. If i wanted to recoat the intire stock with shellac would i have to give it a light sanding first?

Tung Oil
If done properly will not be effected by weather and it tuff as nails when it comes to light scratches. Next would be Varithaine Dimond. Not as good but doesn't stink as much.

I just used a light, almost transparent stain. I figure if its used on a deck or fence that is left outside for years then it should be fine on a rifle that see rain occasionally. I may put a thin coat of Shelac on it, to give it a glossy look, but I don't think its necessary.
