the RCMP pistol is not that bad to shoot, but I still don't get the mag release safety......can anyone explain why they have this feature..??

Do you mean the safety that can be reversed for left hand users? A RCMP officer died a few years back when he reached for his pistol and accidently released his magazine.

Barrie City, Beretta 96 on there way to Glocks
South Simcoe, S&W 40 cal.
Deep River, Beretta 96.
North Bay, Beretta 96.
York Region is converting to Glocks from Baretta
Canadian Wildlife Service (Enviornment Canada) S&W 9mm.

OPP carry Sigs and RCMP carry S&W 40's for the men and 9's for the ladies (if they prefer)
The RCMP do not use 40's, and never have. Members with normal sized hands use a double stacked 9mm S&W. Members with smaller hands or those wanting concealment in plain clothes, opt for a single stack S&W. The choice is their's.

You're right, the RCMP's firearm of choice is a nice firearm to shoot. Having shot it since it was issued. DA is a little stiff, but when moments are tense, it provides a safety net against accidental discharges. The single action is wonderfully crisp and smooth. One heck of an improvement since the model 10 5" with the flap holster.

OK, and for the second part of the poll, for the double jeopary round, which major (over 200 members) police agency in Canada, was the FIRST to issue a semi-automatic firearm to all members? What gun was it?

And what calibre was it in?

What year did this first, happen here in Canada?

And for final jeopardy, what ammunition manufacturer was used, bullet type and velocity?

One more for you brainiacs, what ammunition does that agency use now, velocity/bullet type?????

In the left-handed version of the Safariland 070 holster the mag-release on the 5946 will be exposed. There was a THEORY that Cst. Strongquill's mag became unseated, perhaps due to rubbing on the seatbelt or something similar. As such after the incident the RCMP put the mag release on the other side for lefties so as to prevent this from happening again.

An of course the mag has to be fully seated to deactivate the mag-safety disconnect.

umm single action what? the 5946 is Double action only, unless you are ERT and have one in SA/DA, in which case it's too bad you don't have one of the Sigs.

All of the Smith 5946 pistols are DAO!!! There are no SA/DA S&W firearms issued.

ERT is planning on going back to the Sig 226 with the rail system this year due to the fact that lights are not available for S&W pistols and many of the black smiths in use by ERT do not have lights affixed. This will also facilitate use of a level 3 holster for uniformed carry.

yeah that's what I thought, but don't the guys in ERT have DA/SA (got that backwards in my other post) Smiths? maybe not 5946 as I think that model denotes DAO, but something similar. I know that there was a push to get rid of the 226's they had and replace them with S&W's but not sure the model number.

RCMP ERT have a Blackend 5946 with the mag safety deactivated.

I have a pic of a normal and ERT one side by side on my home computer ( so a bit of a wait...)

The only RCMP members with SIG 226's (9mm)are seinor ERT members who refused to return their original issued SIG's (because they realy like them). They are considering a switch back to the P226 (9mm) Rail guns for ERT nation wide.

Lethbridge Regional Police Service
General Issue: S&W 5946 and S&W 3953 (single stack)
Tactical: SIG P226 rail (9mm) in Double/Single action

P.S. Can't blame the RCMP for the S&W 5946 because we had it before they did. It's actually not that bad of a gun it's just that almost all other makes are better.

Does anyone know what the Newfoundland Contabulary has? I once heard they went from NOTHING to .357 Magnum revolvers. Quite a jump in firepower if you ask me.

The RNC regular patrol members carry a Ruger 357 while guys who also work on the TRU team carry semi auto's, 9mm but not sure of the make.

AFAIK the RNC had the Rugers prior to the 'general carry' change, but in the trunk, etc.

They are replacing them with a semis in the future.

Too bad, I like seeing the big ol' 357 revolvers. Bit of a time warp.

Off topicish... I was in NYC a couple of week ago. Saw one very veteran looking cop still carrying his S&W .38.
