What size limbsaver for old 70's Wingmaster?

I have an old 1970's Remington Wingmaster that I am looking to buy a Limbsaver pad for and was wonder if anyone with the same gun (older Wingmaster) had anyone luck sizing theirs up for one.

The closest fit I can find is using Limbsaver Pad # 10601 which is intended for the Savage 10/110 model wood stock.

The grind to fit models don't sound very promising. People say they look ugly after grinding them down, come apart, etc...

It isn't easy to match up modern buttpads to older buttstocks.

If you want to try one I have from an old 870, I can send it to you if you pay for postage. But it's not a limbsaver.

Thanks easy, but my Wingmaster is already equipped with one of those pads. I don't find it helps very much with recoil (I keep getting bruises :p), which is why I am going for a Limbsaver.

I appreciate the offer though :)
 
Well, in that case I'd like to say, and please, no offense, you're shouldering your gauge incorrectly and/or the length of pull is too long for your stature. There is no reason for a bruised shoulder if you hold your gun tight to your shoulder in the correct position.

I definitely have the stock tight against my shoulder. Perhaps it is a LOP issue. What method is best to determine if the LOP is too long or short?
 
Has Remington really changed the stock parameters over the years? If not any prefit pad that fits a current wood stock should fit an old one, and if that's the case I'd suggest going with a Supercell pad over the Limbsaver.
 
70's wingmaster

I have a 70's wingmaster as well, it has a walnut stock with a curved hard plastic but plate. I bought a Limbsaver Wingmaster pad and it doesn't come close to fitting.
 
you have to use the templaes on the limbsaver website to see which pad fits your stock. The Savage model fits mine the best.

Grind-to-fit is the only way to go if you are particular about having the pad fit exactly.
I install grind-to-fit Limbsaver and Kick-eez pads regularly and I don't see anything wrong with their appearance and I haven't seen any come apart. Kick-eez finishes easier than Limbsaver but both look fine when done.
The Remington Supercell is not grindable.
 
I know this thread is a bit old, but...

Easy.... so you are saying that I shouldn't need any sort of spiffy recoil pad if I am shouldering the gun properly and it has the proper LOP?

If so, do you go by the 1.25" from nose to trigger hand thumb method to determine LOP? I am considering cutting down my stock, as it appears to be about 1.5" - 2" too long.

I would agree with smoji on this one, I had him install a grind to fit on my 870 express and it looks good and works very well. I have had it on there for several years now, and it is not falling apart at all, and that gun gets abused. Last year it was dropped in the duck pond several times (per trip!), and I see no issues with the pad yet.

I see by your Avatar that you are in Southern Ontario. Dean at Gobles in London does an excellent job of fitting pads. You might also think about a Kick-eze pad they are excellent.
 
The Pachmayr or Limbsaver prefit pad will come close, but it still requires grinding to fit.

Why the hell did I not think of that?! lol :redface: I think I will take a look on the EE! Better than cutting up the original stock!

PS - Can synthetic SG stocks be cut shorter, or is there a plastic frame inside that will get goofed up and not allow me to reinstall the pad asfter shortening it?
 
If you need a short buttstock, Remington's "youth" 870 buttstock is 13" LOP versus the standard 14" LOP and is identical except for the length. Synthetic cannot be cut shorter easily that I am aware of.
