what size shotgun shot for 3-gun?

i use an 870 express 12 guage cost me under 300 bucks.

if you mean ammo then i usually use number 8 shot 1 1/8 works well enought for me.
picked up a case of winchester 250 rounds for 65 bucks on friday. federal is also pretty cheap too.
 
it's whatever you like i suppose. i use number 8 shot 1 1/8 ounces for everything. for the matches i go to you dont need slugs or anything of the sort just your standard shot
 
I use 7.5 for most of my shooting needs.

I may go to a full choke for longer shots on plates.

Some of the poppers at the Pan Ams were a little heavy so I opted for #4s as 7.62 says above.

The buckshot on Clays sure was "interesting".
 
The maximum generally allowed in the matches that I have shot since 1986 has been #4 shot. #4 or #5 shot is good if you have heavy reactive steel targets that need to be put down like a full size IPSC pepper popper. #8 shot is good enough if you only need to hit the target and they don't move as in Cowboy Action matches.
 
I stick with nothing smaller than #4, not necessarily to put down heavy steel with ease, but because smaller shot can ricochet off steel all over the place at shorter ranges.

Often times at the matches I've attended, the RO has specified #4, or bigger.

We don't need no stinkin' shrouds for metal targets, just common sense.
 
I've been to a 3-gun where they wanted slugs (easier to patch, perhaps), and were recommending "Reduced Recoil". an usually get a five-pack for about $4-6.00. I needed 30 for the match I attended, but you should always pack up to twice as much ammo as the Match requires, in case of reshoots (equipment failure, scoring problems, etc). I saw a guy get two reshoots (on different stages) on the same day. That same day, I was a bit generous with my shooting (putting extra shots in the movers), then got a reshoot on a stage and had to borrow ammo! Lesson learned...
 
At the Pan Am IPSC Match last week we were shooting at A4 targets with both slugs and Buckshot.

They just put up new targets for every shooter. No patching required at all.

Spray on adhisive made it quick and easy.
 
As dictated by the match director/range. Most of the 3 gun events I've been to I've been able to use 7.5 shot albeit in a somewhat juiced up load. Some staged dictate what other ammo must be used. 00buck, slugs... Whatever.
 
If I had to pick one Do-all shot size, I am discounting Buckshot only stages, I would choose #6's as a general purpose load for Shotgun matches....although, I prefer to have options up or down in sizes as the targets dictate.....heavy steel and Clay birds being the extremes!
 
For paper RR slugs easy to score and patch (they leave a grease ring).

I liked the old #5 orange boxes from CTC but have since run out so now use 7.5 for clay 4 for steel.


I might follow 7.62mm and try some #6, is that for both clay and steel?
