What size steel plate?

I like to use 10" & 12" round plates at all distances for shooting with .223 and greater. I think they're just a good standard size and are realistically sized targets to be shooting (I.E., they roughly cover the vitals area if you put them up against someones chest). Plus, if Its too easy I can just move the plates out further.... 200, 300, 500yrds...

I've seen a lot of people debate on if you should get 10" or 12" plates. I say buy what you can get and which you'd rather carry out to those nasty distances (They are kind of heavy).

Also, If you'll be shooting them with .223 then I would recommend spending the extra money for AR550. The plates should last just about forever if used ONLY at or beyond 100yrs (closer is also unsafe IMHO). Sub 100yrds you'll start to cause craters with .223 (IMPE, .308 tends to be fine at 100yrds).

You might also consider your shooting "application"... I.E., Are you a hunter? Are you shooting competitively (You may want to get 60% targets then)? Are you a MIL/LEO or practicing for zombies? Or are you just into it to have fun and hone your marksmen skills?

;) Just some stuff to think about!

Does anyone know where to get AR550 target plates in Canada? I was looking at the Evil Roy target line from ActionTargets, but haven't found a dealer in Canada.

Has anyone ordered direct from them?

I have access to some scrap steel plating at work. It's 1/4" steel used for general construction.

Is this suitable for targets at 100+ yds? I plan to Suspend them from chains so they will swing.

Should they be painted a certain color for visibility?

1/4 inch mild steel will perforate with most cartridges, even out at 400 yards or further.
We've ruined many a 1/2" gong at 200.
Gone through 3/4", on occasion.

High BC bullets going fast are the worst culprits.

Any colour that contrasts with the background will do.
If you put a basecoat of black under it, the hits will show more.

I just received the Caldwell Magnum Rifle Gong from cabelas.ca. Great gong, reasonable price and is holding up as well or better than my grader blades. Definitely recommended.
