What SKS/type 56 is this? with pictures

Hardly rare. Apparently several from marstar as of late have come in this configuration. No arsenal markings, serial number only. As Chinese arms production is unknown, saying one without a factory stamp is "rare" is a bit of a leap.

Is there a link..? most pictures in that thread are removed..

Copied from the thread, the pics are all still there when I look at it.

hmm interesting, how do you tell a stamped receiver from milled receiver? Other than the factory number?

Thanks!

Pretty sure the pictures I've posted are a good start. There are rivets holding the barrel trunion to the receiver and rivets under the recoil cover. The barrel trunion is square. Look at the photos I've posted and compared them to a milled receiver. There are also cast metal receivers, but I haven't come across one yet. Only pics.

Do you know how much do these go for? I'm trying to get the best collection of the SKS's I can and Ther are MUCH, MUCH more variants to be collected...I think the number of this rifle produced was size-able to that of the AK...

Last one I saw for sale went for $500. First one I saw for sale went for $350.

While the Chinese SKS as a group isn't rare, there are harder to find versions of the Chinese genre that are.

Stamped receivers versions from no less than 4 different factory codes
1979/1980 Factory 26 versions with Bakelite hand guards and receiver latch cut outs on the stock
Sino soviet versions
DP marked versions, rumored for Vietnam

And of course the Public Security marked versions. Not many of these in Canada, more in the US though before the ban stopped imports.

Chinese Public Security Forces were equipped with SKS with a variety of Arsenal markings. /26\ /016\ /416\ [0140] [0141] and [0145] arsenal stamps have been noted as the most common imported to North America, with the vast majority if not all arriving in the US. In addition to the arsenal stamps on the left side of the receiver along with the serial number and "type 56 carbine" Chinese characters, the Security Force rifles were stamped on the right side of the receiver. These markings are called "Gong-An" (not the best pronounciation, but close). These markings are from a /016\ Type 56 with a 18 million serial number. While only /26\ rifles can be accurately dated, this rifle does fit the features of an 18 million /26\, save for having a pinned barrel which would make it quite possibly from 1974. Just a guess though.

Ahh yeah that's helpful, sounds like you know your SKS's! I am of Chinese decent my self and I know that China produced MILLIONS and Millions of these rifles for use for both the military and civilian. From what I understand that there was a batch of Honor Guard SKS's (silver, shiny looking) that were exported to North America, now THOSE are highly collectable. If I ever come across one I'd definitely buy it.

Most of these factory numbers I don't see in Canada, the majority of them are either factory 26s, (I got one with a blade Bayonet, milled trigger guard etc. Serial number is J 99XX, presumably, the parts are made in Russia, and then assembled in China as one of the very first type 56's in China), Factory 306, 625, and 316. The 306 ones I saw usually have pinned receivers, 316s are of decent quality, and 625 for some reason left me a really bad impression after seeing several of them...poorly made and doesn't seem to shoot well..

There are refurbs Chinese SKS as well. Often have shiny orange stocks that lack serial numbers. I've seen several Factory 26 versions with these stocks. The toolings in factory 26 came from Russia, Tula I believe but not certain.

I have one of the factory 26 I bought back in '93 (my guess) for 79.99 $. It's marked Ploy Industries, have a threaded chrome barrel (not pinned) no military markings, milled receiver, sheetmetal trigget guard, spike bayo and all. These came complete, brand new, unfired, with a belly type charger pouch, a green commie sling and the cleaning kit.

They were then said to be assembled with leftover parts of the early '70s. After about '96, the pinned barrels and sheetmetal ones came to the market. The more time flew, the more stamped parts there was, until the catastrophics ones.
