Im gona take out the shotty for bear this year, any one have a preference for what pill I should use or will any old 2 3/4 or 3" slug do or is there something better. I have a ip barrel on my gun. Thanks

12 ga. 2 3/4" slugs work really well, don't put yourself through the 3".
as with all shots, placement is key but you get a good blood trail with a slug.
keep your shot to a range you're comfortable with and good luck!

Use whichever brand of ammo shoots best out of your shotgun. You'll have to try a box of as many as you can just like you would a rifle. 2.75" will do nicely. Yogi isn't that big and men that you need subject yourself to the felt recoil of a 3" slug. He won't care what kills him either.

If you use a tree stand make sure you put it far enough away that you have enough room for barrel. If you are too close barrel will strike bear first.

Here's a thread in which Brobee compared penetration of three types of slugs in ballistic jelly. The Foster type (Winchester) hollow point slugs were terrible (14") compared to a Federal Truball (32.5") or Royal Brenneke slug (29"). The Foster expands into a flat washer, the Federal didn't expand at all with its copper plating mainly intact, and the Brenneke expanded a small amount leaving 12 sharp points around the circumference.

Score (Canadian) makes a copy of the Brenneke type slugs and they should perform very similarly. True Brenneke slugs are like hen's teeth in Canada. Ammosupply.ca has the Score slugs for $159/200 or $8.49/10.

Cheers,

Accuracy Plus in Peterborough. Regular stocked item; 12 gauge 2 3/4 RWS Classic Rottweil Slug.

Other sub-gauges available on a special order basis. (By the flat as a minimum order, so I was told)

I run the SCORE 1 1/8 oz 2 3/4"" slugs in my KSG. I can't speak to how well they perform on hunting, but as far as accuracy, I've found that out to 35 to 50m, they are quite accurate out of a 18" barrel. Out to 100m, you'd be lucky if they stay on a 8" plate. I was using a red dot for the targeting, but found that grouping was terrible. Then again, they are shotgun slugs. While the slugs themselves are rifled, I don't think they get a decent spin on them in flight. They just become unstable.

If you are comfortable with a 50m range, then you should be fine with them.

shoot what's most accurate in your gun you are sending a heavy piece of lead down range it dose not need to be going 1600fps to do its job it needs to be accurate. my go to shotgun slug for my smooth bore is a home cast/home loaded lee foster slug it is only moving at about 1350 fps as im using a target shell load data its accounted for a deer so far. everybody thinks you need to get things moving as fast as you can but when you are talking about a pure lead slug slow is better drive them too fast and they break apart and flatten out like no tomorrow(some factory slugs do this)

Have you looked into using those Lyman 525 grain slugs? I bought a mold for it and casted a bunch, but I don't have any shot shell reloading equipment for them. I thought they were a pretty neat slug, but I haven't read too much on their terminal performance, or even accuracy for that matter.

no I have not as the mold is very expensive but it looks like it would do better in a rifled barrel I only shoot smooth bore shotguns when I need a rifle I use a rifle. I have used just about everything at my disposal lee 7/8oz and 1oz slugs along with .600",.690",.715" rounds balls the lee 1oz shoots the best and the .600" is used in a 2" shell load these are all for 12ga
