Greetings,

Looking at joing the ranks of buckskinners and Rendezvous goers and am wondering what black powder rifles you folks are using when you head out to an event?

Also, any info on this kind of happening in the Nova Scotia area would be great.

Thanks,

Matt

Well you could go with flint or caplock to start, any type of gun really will work. As far as period correct if you wanted to play buckeskinner. You could use a kentuckey or penslyvannia rifle. Also a hawken style rifle would work too.

All sorts of trade guns aswell. Military arms can work too i you are going to dress up for that.

Hell any type of blackpowder muzzleloader would work as long as it isnt one of those damn mondern ones. Should stay authentic to the period.

It depends in part on the match that I am competing in. For regular trail walks, I use 50 and 54 cal pennsylvania style flintlocks (usually) and for squirrel matches (must be 40 or less) a 32 cal pennsylvania flinter. For trade gun matches, an english fowler style in flint. On other occasions, for fun and diversity, I will use a percussion half stock or occasionally a 43 cal cape gun

what to shoot

i find that a lot of regular shooters keep a thompson center hawken in .45,.50 or .54 around for general shooting. they are dirt reliable ,simple to use and easy to work on and as well find parts for. best value for dollar as you can usually find a good used piece for about 350-

Well that sounds like a blast :p is it smooth or rifled ? I cant recall.

smooth bore but double triggers and rifle sights. 230 grains of 1F and .935 patched ball. Bore is .950 Gun weighs only 14 lbs and it does concentrate your attention when it goes off. :>)

Back to the original poster, I would suggest starting with a percussion hawken style in .54 cal and made by TC. TC for durability of lock parts, hawken style because you can take the barrel out to clean and percussion because it flint has a few extra wrinkles to learn when you are starting out. .54 cal because it moves the gongs but does not kick too much and is relatively easy on powder. I would use 3F powder and moose milk as a lube for target shooting because you can shoot all day without cleaning

I never attended events, simply 'cuz there were were none in my area at the time, but I was into buckskinning fairly big time. Overall, my favourite smokepole is an Ardesa Kentucjy in 45 cal. percussion. I also have a CVA 45 cal. Kentucky that i really like. With either one, I can use 22 gr. of fffG and a round ball for small game, and 70 gr. of ffG with a 240 gr. Maxi for bigger stuff. At 30 yds, I can take the head of a rabbit or a grouse, and it will shoot well within 6" (offhand) at 100 yds.

I prefer longrifles so I build my own: this year I was very successful with a 44" swamped barrel percussion in 54 cal and last year a 40" 45 cal percussion copy of a genuine unserviceable oldie wall-hanger inherited years ago. The important thing is that your gun should fit without you having to contort your head to align the sights. They all are different so spend some time in shops putting the different makes and models to your shoulder and checking the feel, including apparent weight. Most rendezvous involve offhand shooting so a double-set trigger is a nice option. For the smoothie events I use a 58 cal Fusil de Chasse flinter. Have fun...

When i attend shoots , generally ill have my thompson hawken 50 percussion, super reliable and shoots accurately, i also have a loyalist arms "french fusil de chasse" in 62 cal smoothbore, ill tell you, whoever tells you the indian manufacture guns arent shooters? they should think again, ive hd smoothbores, but this one shoots as gd as a rifled gun right up to 75yrds, some shoots i go to, have a shotgun skeet match after the rifle shooting, i have a pedersoli sxs i shoot, as well i use the fusil de chasse with shot charges, but i also have an english sxs percussion gun made by hopkins, built in 1850's, with twist barrels, that turns alot of heads, as mostly guys with have modern shotguns, last shoot i attended i had the only vintage shotgun for the match, majority had thomspon encores with shotty barrels, , i never go to a shoot with just 1 gun, always have a variety,

what to shoot?

it's probably overkill but at last rendezvous i had 4 pieces to choose from and the wife had 2. modern made for regular trails and originals for the squirrel and smoothbore trails.

Hello Guys
Well I use a CVI (1961) Penns , that has a one piece stock, and a 40 inch 50 cal barrel , amazing gun. I can set it up in both cap and as a flinter... best regards Maddawg

Greetings,

Been doing a lot of looking online and I think I have narrowed it down to the 1806 Baker Rifle from Track Of The Wolf. A .62 cal smoothbore repro. And if I am right they also offer a rifled barrel as well. Want to get that so I can swith back and forth between smooth and rifled. Love the looks of the rifle and can only hope it handles as well as it looks.

If anyone has tried this rifle (I am assuming it is the same repro available from Loyalist) I would like to read your reviews or comments.

With Greatest Respect,

Matt
