I would honestly say the worst part about shooting nice groups with the M1A has been the trigger. Both of my HB builds don't have any trigger work done. I'll shoot some targets next time I'm home to prove the "mythical" accuracy of these guns.

I'm using 168SMK's in IVI or PMC brass. Chrono'd at 2585 avg. I found both IMR 4895 and Hodgdon 4895 powders shoot about the same at the same charge weights.
 
Fairly easy to get 2 MOA, and then just keep adding substantial amounts of money until you get to the accuracy level you want (or can afford).
You could spend 1/4 as much on a Rem M700 and get the same accuracy out of the box but it wouldn't be an M1A.
It's worth it if you think it is.
 
Hadn't shot mine since the spring and had it out at my long range spot on Sunday to stretch her legs out. I always forget just hot much fun it is to shoot. It danced around the 2/3 IPSC plate at 830 yards a bunch but got some solid hits in too. Not bad considering the width of the plate works out to under 1.5 moa at that distance. If only they made an ARMS 18 with 20 moa built in. I had to max out my elevation at 29moa and still holdover 0.6 mil to have centred up hits (168 HPBT @ 2620 or so) :)
 
I don't know how accurate my SA SOCOM16 is but it's my favourite rifle/platform to shoot.
It feels so ###y in my hands and shooting "long-range" with irons is very satisfying....
 
I put my Chinese M305 in a Sage CNC aluminum stock $900.00. I also changed the op rod, gas piston, and op rod guide and gas shims to a Sadlak. With 41.3 gr IMR 4895 and 168gr SMK I can produce 1.285 inch groups for a 10 shot group. The glass on top is an inexpensive Bushnell 3-10 The stock rifle as it came from Marstars would shoot 4 to 8 inch groups with Chinese ammunition
 
My experience Springfield m1A with non corrosive China Ammo 3-4 in groups same with Norinco 3-4 in groups. But with better Ammo the M1A will print 2 in if your doing your part Norinco 3. Depends what Ammo your planning on using and remember Norinco is 650 vs M1A at 2600. Get Norinco and shoot more with money you saved lol
