What species is this critter?

That is definitely a whitetail....and it looks like it may still be in velvet, hence the "odd" look to the rack.

My guess is a whitetail, the horns do not appear to branch!

It's a coloured MuleTail, with a sore ass and a stiff neck. Nice one too I might add.
