Im talking with a machine shot to make a cylinder for a revovler I have. Replacement parts dont exist and I wold trust new steel far more than 100 year old stuff - no matter how good it looks.

Anyways, ive been doing some reading about steels used for magnum cylinders and some steels used by some makers...

What im getting is: heat treated 4130, 4140 or 4340 (for the big magnum guys)

anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
For bp and light smokeless pressures would 4130 (untreated) do the trick? Im not sure how much more the cost would be to machine the 4140 down or even further, the 4340...

also, would 4130 do the trick for a cylinder pin for say an 1860 Colt Army?
