What the heck do I have?

I bought this rifle as a backup rifle for moose hunting. The barrel has a '43 date stamp. The receiver has 2 c broad arrow stamps. It has a Lyman peep sight with the center missing. The barrel has been shortened. A monte carlo stock has been added with a wooden recoil pad. The rifle has been sanitized (from what I can see). I think this maybe a no1 mark 3 that has been sanitized and re-barreled. Any help would be appreciated. FWIW the barrel has a mint bore and it supposedly is VERY accurate. I think I did alright for 150 bones ;)

Yup, it was a SMLE, No. I Mk. III.
Classic example of how to take a $400 rifle, put a lot of time and work into it, and wind up with a $150 rifle.
If its a good shooter, enjoy it, and put it to good use.

That's what I thought too. However it looks as though the work was done long before my time. The rifle was probably only worth 20 bucks at the time. :)
It will be put to good use. I don't have safe queens ;)
For what it's worth there are 2 notches perfectly carved into the recoil pad. Also the only markings are someones 9 digit service or SIN number. I wonder is it a military target rifle?

Nah. A typical "sportered" classic. Tragic really.
 
That can be a very apt deer&moose rifle.
But that "Schnabel" fore-end could be and should be reshaped a bit, it is reversed and far too heavy for that rifle's lines. It reeks of Bubba.

I noticed that. I will have my gunsmith look at it. It's kinda touching on one side towards the muzzle anyway, so a good reshaping/shortening wouldnt hurt.
 
Should be a very good rifle, especially with that Lyman adjustable hunting peep. You just can't get faster on target with anything else apart, maybe, a red dot sight.
and the .303 British is no slouch round in the power or accuracy departments, especially with 180gr. flat-based hunting bullet loads.

Nice practical reworking of a clumsy old war horse once you fix that "Schnabel" fore-end.

The lyman is missing the little center eye piece. Any idea where I can get one?
 
Check the headspace before you do anything else.

"...Lyman is missing the..." The peep threaded? If not there likely wasn't an insert for that model sight.
 
The inserts are cheap and available from Lyman.........I'd get the Twilight one for hunting and a smaller one for paper punching.Many have the side of the Lyman sight drilled and tapped for holding spare apertures..............Harold

The peep is threaded. I will definitely have the stock worked on to get it relieved.

Just checked Lymans website and the aperture is 7.50.
