What the Hell Happened to my K98k?

LOL..... I'm glad there are some guys here who know I'm not quite foolish enough to do that ;)

Just thought I'd wait until I got home from work before I fessed up... let you guys sweat a bit first ;)

She's a 1942 dot G.33/40 bolt mismatch, though the bolt is in the same letter block. The fellow who first had it chopped the stock ( :( ) so the second owner put it in the set you see there, which matches itself. It's otherwise correct, though perhaps should be in a laminate stock rather than the hardwood, but I think I did well for what I paid.

Just to proove I'm not the anti-christ, here are a couple overall shots. Sorry I didn't have todays newspaper to put in the shot, and haven't got a chance to photograph it under proper light:

In a sick way I'm glad I could fool a few posters. I've been waiting for this rifle since April and dreaming all summer while working to pay for it about the thread I'd start once it arrived ;)

Oh yeah?? I know of a several K.98 snipers which have been sporterized to various levels.

I could tell you about the nice "grey" Winchester 1892 rifle which I was so pleased to get a gun with such a mint bore for an affordable price.

When I got it home and started cleaning it I was puzzled at the amount of bluing protected by the screws.

Looking closer I reacted with true horror when I realized it had been a high condition gun (90%ish) which had had the blueing removed with steel wool, presumably so that it would look like all the shiney grey ones on TV.

Oh well, it went from a $1500 gun to a $350 (then anyway) gun (which I could afford) by some idiot's attempt to "improve" it.

The part that scares me is that I suspect that the bluing was removed shortly before it was flogged off in an attempt to RAISE the price.
 
I particularly enjoyed the experimental LB sniper with an XP prefixed serial number that came into Gunco 2 years ago to be sporterized. The gunsmith sensibly refused to do it and had to laboriously explain to the owner why he was being an @sshat.

Dumb-ass rare gun question of the day:

Is the finish really worn or were they issued in the white?

The stock looks so nice it seems strange the finish would be so worn...?
 
It is in fact worn, as under the handguard the blueing is still a deep blue.
These old girls were definatly veterans, and it shows on the majority of them.
 
I believe the experimental sniper came into Gunco to be deactivated, unless there was a second one. I wondered at the time if deactivating a sniper required smashing the lenses in the scope.
There have been a lot of rare rifles ruined by alterations. What is remarkable is that it is still being done. Just heard about a really nice '81 Marlin in .45-90 that had just had a set of Uncle Mike's swivels installed.
 
I saw a nice RCAF .455Auto 1911 deactivated a few months ago. Was in really nice shape too! the smith had the good sense to pull the .455 barrel and weld in a .45ACP barrel instead. Lots of original .455Autos are around and missing the often replaced .455Auto tube. A buddy who collects them needed one, so that's where it ended up.

Sad stuff.

I also recently saw a P-26 Polustuslaitos M91 in mint non-refurbed shape turned into a 91/30PU wannabe using cheapo repro cast parts and the crappy Kalinka scope 3 weeks ago. That one made me angry too. I offered to buy the rifle and give they guy a less collectible one to use for bubba work, but he wouldn't hear any of it :(
 
G33/40

Wow! Skippy congratulations on finally adding her to your collection. I've been working in the Tar Sands all summer, now I'm ready to try to up you.. as I am in the market too for a G33/40

You guys need to raise your ambitions. Forget a plain G33/40, how about a para-takedown K98k, or a resin stocked K98k, or a late-war Kriegsmodel high-turret sniper?

Unfortunately, BBOTW has fakes in it and people take it as gospel.

The Takedown K98 (Klapschaft) and the Resin Stocked
K98's showing up on GB,AA and GA are all frauds being fabricated of recent.

It takes even a braver man to look at a high turret that hasn't been humped.

Buyer Beware! And definitely have it authenticated by others that are knowledgeable before laying down the cash.
