I'm heading to Las Vegas next week and will be hitting a few shops looking for parts for my M305 shorty. My question to you enthusiasts is, if you were heading state side what would you pick up and why?

You might want to stick to t-shirts and maybe a soft case. There are restrictions in place on some items. Restrictions on exporting or even possesing as a foreign national. Things could go badly if you show up at the border with the wrong item. Unless you KNOW what you can or can't bring back without the proper paperwork I wouldn't be in a hurry to try.

You can't buy or be in posession of gun parts of any kind in the U.S.

Unless you want to be cavity searched and jailed ;)

I usually pick up patches and reloading tools or other accessories. Order them a week before you go and have them sent to your hotel.

A gun case with a tall zipper (made for tall optics and bipod installed) since I abhor using the Ass***t Rifle moniker.

A good cleaning rod that is 24" long, Dewey makes one for the M14/M1Garand family.

That should prevent yer #### from falling off... because gun parts illegally exported out of the USA will have yer #### fall off!

Cheers,
Barney

Unless I'm mistaken, buying or possessing gun parts in the USA is perfectly legal (except for receivers, wich are considered the firearm under the law).... It is exporting certain key parts or if the parts are over a certain monetary value that is illegal under US laws unless you have the proper export permit. Bottom line, exporting parts out of the US, especially if you travel by plane, is risky...

it amazes me that these types of questions get asked in a public forum.

If want the answer, call the US state department. You've already been told what they are going to say.

On the plus side, fishing equipment is all good to go and it's way cheaper in the USA. You can buy fluorocarbon 100% line for like 8 bucks, where it's $20+ here. I usually pick up a plastic toolbox or tackle box and STUFF it full of lures. I have a box at home big enough to put a computer in full of bass and trout lures that I paid about $30 bucks for.

I'm a big fan of rear drag reels, but they're typically found on lower end offerings. There was a nice Shimano reel here for about $89.00 that I got down in the USA for like $60.00 and the dollar was $1.10 when I bought it, so I got about 5% off.

Those Winchester knives you see at WSS for about $30.00 I got for $6.99 at Wal-Mart in Mississippi. Children's clothes for kids 0-6months are like 60% off. You can also get Count Chocula in the USA so I bring a box or two of that back from piggly wigglies.

I wouldn't stress so much about the gun stuff. Limit yourself to accessories and you'll be good. Just remember that brass casings, bullets, primers, etc are all classified as ammo.

If you're flying direct to Vegas, the airport has slot machines and you can smoke anywhere.

The biggest pro-tip I can give you is to buy a stupid amount of patches, you're going to use them eventually and they're like 75% off down there. I have a few friends that work at the distributors and gun stores here in Canada and I'm telling you, you can buy stuff down there cheaper than the middlemen here buy it for, especially accessories.

If you're coming back via Seattle, there's a good deal on right now for Grant's scotch at the duty free in the S wing part. There's also this retardedly hot Ukrainian girl that works there. If you go through detroit, they have all the different types of Patron on for $42, $44, and $46 respectively.

Looks like I'll be stopping through the S wing in Seattle!
Thanks for all the advice from all those who gave it and the warning from those concerned.
Much appreciated.

Yeah look for that Ukrainian girl, I think her name is Olga or something she's smoking hot. The scotch I'm talking about is the 1L of Grant's reserve for $20.00, it's better than their other stuff and cheaper. Normally it's $23.00 for 750ml in BC

Basically there is nothing you can bring back. You require export licences/permits to bring almost all firearms parts out of the U.S. You can not purchase or be in possession of ammunition as well........

Last time I checked, Tools were okay to bring back.......

But to be sure contact the following:

U.S. Dept. of State - controls almost everything to do with firearms/parts/accessories

U.S Dept of Commerce. - Controls shotguns/shotgun parts. scopes/sights/mounts

Just got back from there a couple of weeks ago. :D When I opened my suitcase, there was a little note from TSA, advising that my suitcase had been searched. Mighta been all the rocks wife picked up. Kinda glad I didn't buy that dummy practice hand grenade at Hahns.:D

Grizz

If your going to Vegas I would assume your flying? You are leaving from a US Airport. They have lots of fancy detectors there and hardened screeners :)

You may not leave from that US Airport :)

So if I'm going down there to shoot my LRB and it has usgi parts from the factory how do I get it back here, am I not allowed to have spare parts when I compete? I thought that was one of the advantages in not having a chinese gun. Same for IPSC, where alot of guys have practically a spare gun in parts.

Once USGI parts are exported out of the U.S. it is illegal to bring them back in..........this law has been in place for a number of years....

The IPSC guys would have invitations to shoot a match in the U.S. I am assuming that they have "spare" parts covered in their paperwork to compete in the match.

Maybe one of the IPSC guys who compete in the U.S. will chime in.......
