im going on a moose hunt in October and i am just getting my gear all set up! now i am looking at rifles! i am hunting inNorth BC and the shots will be anywhere from 15 yards to 300 yards. the rifles i currently am between is a winchester model 70 30-06 and a tikka t3 300 win mag sporter!! what would you pick? or is this a good excuse to get a new rifle :)

your going to need some rope (500feet) a winch a truck, some snatch blocks a chain saw some gas and lots of hands ton help haul that critter to camp.
Shoot what you got and start accumulating the rest...oh sharp knives too, not just one or two and make sure someone knows how to sharpen them and hone them too.
Did I mention you should shoot what your most comfortable with and probably already own.
No need to buy a new gun/caliber/scope combo with moose season around the corner (less than 60 days away) and just a few weekends to familiarize yourself with those new items.
Just my .02
Rob

You are in perfect stead with your 300 WM, use 180 gn plus bullets and you will do fine. I personally preferred 200 gn Parts when I used to hunt with a 300 WM, you give up nothing trajectory wise within normal hunting ranges but you get better penetration and more energy on target.

Oh ya, and an Argo is an absolute must, 2 is better.....................

The 30-06 is a lot Easier find ammo up north if your going up highway 37

Your .300 Win Mag is perfect for moose hunting. Your .30-06 is almost as perfect. Or is it the other way around?

ive had my 30-06 for 4 years and that's what I feel most comfortable with I have only had my win mag for a year. only got about 60 rounds through it so far

30-06 is more gun than you need, but if you are comfortable with it, go for it.

my grandfather got 50+ moose in the Smithers, area, using his 30-30 rifle. Only 1 needed a second shot. Shot placement.

Most guys up north will be using 30-06 and 243
I can understand sum one hunting in open farm Country using 300wm but not in the bush

What carverk said. I am prepping to go on a moose hunt in October as well. It will be in northern Ontario. I asked the group I joined up with. Their answers to me were what are you comfortable with. Taking the 308 longest shot is expected to be 150yd. A clean ethical shot is better than a super boomer that wounds.

Either of your cartridges is a good choice... but as for platform, I would take the M70 before the Tikka. Get a couple very good knives and learn to use a honing stone...

What do they have on them for optics? I see you wrote that you're most comfortable with your .30-06, I would say that is the one to take then.

The best place to shoot a moose is....next to a fork lift.

30/06 180grains of your choice of premium bullet. ie. Nosler Partition etc

I like going cheep on my hunting rifles I don't need to spend big bucks on a rifle I have other thing to spend money on during hunting season like gas
Wen I am looking for a new rifle I always look at The price of ammo and availability in small remote communities a 30-06 may not be cool but it works
The best hunting investment I made was not a new rifle and scope instead I got a FLIR ps32 and my two Rokon still need a skidoo and a jet boat but that's not happening this year lol
It's all a matter of where you whant to invest your money
