I'm going to CFB Borden for my first service rifle experience this weekend, but all I have for gear is a gun, optic and some magazines.

I don't have a carrier, pouches or a harness, what would you guys recomend I haul my magazines and ammo around with during the event? Will a backpack (or even a murse) work?

Take whatever you have, anything is better than nothing. I got some webbing and mag pouches for mine, for under $50.

But thats when im at the range, im sure there are better things to use.

Gotta start somewheres, right?

Good luck and get some pics!!!!!!!!

P.S. - What is a "murse"?????

First time I went I just wore hiking pants and stuck my extra mag(s) in a cargo pocket. All the rest of my cr@p in a backpack. Murse should work just fine too.

Putting mag in the pants is a ####ty idea......IMHO. I would rather carry a travel bag or courier bag. Backpack, camelpak.....

almost any kind of pouch- i like the mess kit ones cause you can carry about 6 at once, but the old 84 pattern fn pouches are the best- they/ve got the pull-up tabs so you don't have to reach into thepouch to get the mag( which i've never seen on other pattern pouches) and are individual pockets so they don't rattle

Sounds like a good excuse to order your first chest rig...

I saw some people using their travel bags over the weekend - it is actually prestty cool.

I think BFG now has first responder bag that can fold out as a vest - might the perfect choice.

Pants pockets would be fine the zeroing. Not so much for run downs.
Definitely not ideal, but you can do run downs with a mag in your pocket. Better than skipping the shoot because you don't have a fancy chest rig. Remember, you're only really carrying one mag, the other one is in your rifle (and maybe carry a spare, just in case).

And, you can even get away with just carrying the mag in your other hand on the run-down.

Well, depends on the particular run down. The one we did on the weekend I had 8 mags with me. I only had room in pouches for 4, the AR was to be unloaded, so that made me have to carry the rest .. in pockets..... Slowed me down considerably.

I am now in the market for more molle pouches. LOL

Yeah, but don't do like I did and throw it on the ground when you get there. :kickInTheNuts:

Plink,

What kind of run down required 8 magazines?

Dimitri

One that allows you to shoot unlimited ammo. Don't really want to be reloading the mag when you get there... You weren't at the shoot were you?

I don't do Service Rifle competitions yet. I am considering Spring 2010, so I can have some time learning/practicing on my new rifle before I do it.

However its a Envoy (Lee-Enfield) and therefor no magazines. :)

By the way if anyone uses range cards for shooting. I modified the US Army style to be Commonwealth Friendly. :p

The match allowed you to shoot unlimited ammo at the target as Alex said. You were allowed up to 9 mags. I had 8, but not enough mag pouches on my vest to carry them all! :D

I did manage to empty like 6 of them once I got to the 100 though.. LOL
