what to do 22lr or 22wmr

I need a little help here, and Im sure this has been asked many times before.I would like to purchase a rimfire rifle, and Im at a fork in the road in deciding which caliber to go with 22lr or 22wmr. I want to punch holes into paper with it but I also wish to do some bird, rabbit, and the coyote hunting with it. Please tell me your opinion on either caliber. Your help in this decision would be helpful.....THANKS...
 
i don't have any experience hunting, but i have done lots of reading and asking!

you can hunt all those animals with the 22lr, but most people don't recommend hunting a larger animal than a rabbit with that ammo. shooting paper is great with the 22, it can definitely do that :)

I have 3 rimfire rifles, the last one to get will be the 22mag. try to buy them all :) pull a matrix on that fork and go every way possible !
 
you want at least a 243 for yotes- they won't let you get close enuogh with a 22-even with CALLING
 
Can't really compare the two.
$2 for 50 rounds of LR, $10 for wmr

LR is great for anything up to 50 yds and more of a paper puncher and rabbits/ground hogs etc, past that.

WMR is a bit overkill or plinking and bunnies at normal range but will take a coyote at 100 when you do your part. Will even take one at 150 if you are 100% certain of your shot shoot between the eyes.

IF you are considering a 22 wmr, might as well also consider a 17HMR.

+1. There are .22's that will work fine on yotes, but they are all centerfire. 22-250, 223 and others will all do the job on yotes.

OP, buy the LR, no matter what you do, you will end up with one anyway and they are the greatest training/practice rifle going.

No gun enthusiast's battery is complete without at least one .22LR. Get one for cheap plinking and small game and use something like a .223 or .22-250 for coyotes.
 
If you want get a 22WMR consider the H&R Sportster, I got one for 180.00$. Its a simple single shot that's not a big expense, the 22 mwr is about three times the round that the 22lr is. After you get both then there is the 22 hornet.
 
Like some others have suggested, I would say get the 22 LR first. Great cartridge to begin with & get alot of trigger time more 'cheaply.'
Then graduate up to a 204/222/223, you'll be better off in the long run.
But in the end it's up to you........whatever turns your crank buddy.

What he says!! I bet I put 500 rounds through my .22lr for every 50 I put through all my other rifles combined. Get a .22lr for targets, plinking, rabbits etc. Then when the time come for coyotes, save up for a centrefire .22
 
.22 LR if you want to punch paper, cheap,and its not like you're going to "wound" the target.
I would suggest centerfire for any coyote shooting. Though I did once nail a young yote between the eyes at 40ish yards with a CCI stinger, he flopped around for a while and I had to shoot him again when I got there.... kinda unethical using rimfire on dogs.
 
If you do buy that WMR rifle or pistol ,you can allways shoot the WRF cartridge in it for the smaller game (less chance of meat damage) same .224 bullet just less Vel.

Keep the shot in the vitals, Dont shoot farther than you or the rifle can hit the target, and use the proper ammo.
