What to do if you're scoped?

What to do if you're glassing for game and see that you're being scoped by a hunter

  • Hit the dirt and fire a single round over the head of the hunter so it's obvious you're pissed

There has only been one time when I thought I was being scoped, but I couldn't confirm it, as I was cleaning a deer and left my binos in the truck. I waved and stood up to make sure I got their attention and they eventually drove off. Yes, they passed our truck on the way in and knew there were hunters there.

Anyway, if it were to happen to me, I would likely confront the person and gather any information (plate #, etc) and report them to the CO &/or RCMP. In my opinion, those people should loose their right to hunt &/or posess a rifle.

"Responding Accordingly" sure seemed to imply that one should start shooting. I'd like to see anyone try to explain this one to the authorites when standing over a dead guy who cannot confirm your explanation of "but sir, he pointed his gun at me". Although, I'm fortunate enough to say that it has never happened to me (that I know of), I would wave and let him know that I am a hunter. Then, I'd proceed with trying to identify the guy and reporting him to the RCMP. I just don't think that starting a gun fight out there in the bush will go a long ways to gain support for our fight against further gun controls. Remember, that people who do this is usually because they're too cheap and stupid to buy binocs, NOT because they intend to kill you, big difference. In my books, it should be treated in a whole different manner than one who actually intends to threaten you (that guy should be a better shot than I am, and that's not likely ;) ).

Oh...I don't hunt with people who don't use binoculaurs, I also don't hunt with people who keep a round chambered with the safety on, or with people who have lesser hunting ethics than my own. Problem solved.

Ba not a big deal, I've been scoped many times,

I don't carry Binos either. If you can't tell what type of animal it is with the Mk1 eyeball its too far to shoot anyways.

While I agree that there is not real reason to scope someone while hunting I can't see why you would want to go and try to provoke a conflict over it.

I salute you on your passive attitude woodchopper, but doesn't "not minding" kinda go against the John Stuart Mill quote under your comment? I likely won't start a confrontation if one can be avoided - especially when guns are involved, by I sure don't imply that I don't mind and that I won't take some type of "responsible" action.

Just what exactly do you mean by "respond accordingly". You really need to clarify this one.

I'm certainly not advocating shooting back, if that's what you're insinuating. IF somebody has their scope on you, life as you know it could be over very quickly.

1. Get out of way/dive behind tree.
2. Let the "Scoper" know that you are there, and are human.

As a matter of fact, I did think that shooting back is what you meant. Reason I did is because you said "if someone is threatening your life". That's where the confusion comes in. If someone is scoping you, they are not necessarily threatening your life, they are displaying an unparalleled stupidity level. If someone verbally threatens to kill you or sticks a muzzle in your ear, then yeah, they are threatening to kill you, in which case - go for it as I would. Glad we were able to clear that up, and NO, I don't think you're too sensitive, just a bit unclear that's all.

Fair enough, I see how my statement could've been misconstrued. I edited my original post to reflect this.

My buddy was hunting with his brother this fall, and saw his brother walking back down the ridge, towards him.

He hid behind a bush at about 200 yards, far enough so that his brother couldnt instantly recognize him..Then popped out, dropped to his knee, and pretended to bring arifle to his shoudler (hs rifle was still slung on his back)

Brother absolutely freaked out, DOVE behind a tree, starting hollaring out "HEY HEY!! PUT YOUR GUN DOWN!!"

:p :D :D

Buddy was tempted to unsling is rifle and crack a few rounds in the opposite direction..which woudl have made hs brother ####!!:D :D

Might be just me, but I fail to see the humour!!!

This may have been asked before - if so forgive me - but I can't find reference to the topic. What would the right approach if you're out hunting and come to the top of a ridge to start glassing using binos of course and you see another hunter on the opposite slope maybe 600 meters away using the scope on his rifle to glass you. What is the right approach at that point? I want to behave semi civilized but at the same time I definately would somehow like to give him the message that such behavior is in very bad taste and extremely dangerous especially to me.

rape them. they wont soon forget that lesson

The problem with option 3 (walk toward him to make contact) and option 4 (wave arms frantically) is that you could easily get killed or seriously wounded (all it takes is a light trigger and a nervous twitch). Anyone who's that stupid to scope you, what are the odds that he also has his finger curled around the trigger as well as probably a low resolution garbage scope?? :runaway: Maybe even bad eyesight to top it all off.:runaway: :runaway:
