If I was not going to flog it to someone that buys into the legend enough to pay extra for it.
Use the money to buy one that's already been modified, and go to town on it. This view is from a purely cash motivated perspective. Unmodified, and unrefinished specimens seem to draw the dollars. Customs have to be really good to draw much, or they have to be associated with a famous name of one sort or another. It's pretty rare, if not impossible to get ones money back out of a custom, either.
Of course, if you are building a rifle that you plan to keep, have at!

I use a 1959 (IIRC) vintage Model 70 Featherweight, in .308, for pretty much all my hunting.

It'll always be in the configuration that it's in now, for emotional, rather than practical reasons.
