I have recently acquired an old Mossberg 42 trainer. to say its rough is an understatement, oh hell its barking like a dog. The stock is broke, the mag is missing, and it has been abused, but it does function. I cleaned up the action and it does fire. I know I can repair the stock, I did see a mag on flee bag for 50 bucks(holy crappers). Even is I did fix it up it will never be a beauity queen. Its looks like it would be a descent shooter, is it worth the 50 bucks to get the magazine or should I just ditch it for parts.

If you ran an ad for your magazine in the EE, or started stalking shows you may find your magazine cheaper.

If your total investment in the project is the cost of a magazine, then you should go ahead. The 'ol Mossbergs shoot really well. If yours has a good bore, you will not find a .22 that shoots as well for anywhere near 50 bucks!

Stocks pop up (try Archer Sam) once in a while in the EE too.

Well 200 bucks and you get a nice new stevens 22 lr rifle...

That being said depends on if you care about it or not.

Now you can buy a new stock you can reblue it and make it look like new you can buy a new magazine might find 1 cheaper somewere else.

You might want to take the butplate off and see if the magazine is inside that

I unfortunately don't have a stock for a 42M if yours is a full length wood model. These are usually good shooters from what I've seen. I've had good results with CCI Standard Velocity and CCI Blazer. If your rifle has all or at least 2 of the sights then it would be well worth restoring if you only need to buy the mag and the stock is fixable. If you could post a few pictures it would help.
As for a mag I would also look in the trap door in the butt plate first then go to the shows and search them out. Not sure where you are thou. Might not be too many shows near NWO.

Ipicked up two of the trainers at Ellwoods about 4 yrs back mine has the mag and the Wife's has the tubular magazine. There both good rifles and shoot pretty accurately. I picked up an extra mag from Ellwoods for 17$ i think its worth it to repalce the stock. There nice little rifles.

Which 42 do you have? If it's a 42Mb it will have no cheek piece in the stock. The other 42's had cheek pieces. If it is an early 42M, it will have no mag plate in the opening of the stock, just a hole. If it's just a 42, it will not be a full stock and will not be a trainer. In fact, the only 42 that was a trainer was the 42Mb and most were sent to Britain as lend lease rifles. The other 42 full stock versions were not military trainers.
