I picked up a Rem SPS Varmint in 243 on a whim and the rifle hasn't even got here yet but I'm wondering what to do with it. I have a 22-250 and 17 Rem on the low side and a 257 Wby and 7mm WSM among many others on the bigger side. My thinking right now is to throw on a nice stock and run a AI reamer into it and use it like that for now and if everything goes well and I like it I can just thread on a better quality barrel later in the same chambering or any other short action cartridge. Not looking for a target dedicated rifle, I'm thinking either way it will be used for yote and wolf class game.

Load some 55-58gr bullets over H380, H4895, Varget your choice. Take it out and try it before you change anything. It may just be your new coyote gun. I have had great results with many stock SPS's.

I was thinking it needs to stay a 6mm of some kind because that's the only gap I really have, this will likely be a project that gets done 1 step at a time, I was thinking shooting bullets more like the 75 or 87 gain vmax bullets

Just bought a 243...and it hasn't arrived yet and you want to change it. Would not 243 AI basically be a 6 rem. Do you think you might be over thinking things here. Gun might be the laser beam of god at the range and against yotes.

Might want to think a sturdy bonded hunting bullet also, then one projectile would be good for yotes and whitetail. I find the varmit bullets make grapefruit size exit holes. Hard to see any use of a hide after seeing that.

I would worry more about the fact that you seem to buy stuff even though you have no idea why you are doing it. THAT could get to be a big problem.

I'd buy one of the many mcmillans in the EE right now and load up some 105 hornady's and call it good. If you were to get it AI'd I'd cut the barrel back to 24" and get a fresh crown on it.

My 243Ai retired my 257 wby.

A nice stock and changing the chamber will still leave you with an entry level deer rifle. Rem .243 700's are rifled for heavy bullets. A Speer 90 grain fmj will do nicely for coyotes and wolves. Assuming you're hide hunting. Use IMR4350 with 'em myself. Certainly not in a high priced SPS though. It's an ancient Cooey M71 I put a Win M70A stock on. Shoots minute of deer all day though.

I'm not at all worried about buying stuff without knowing exactly how it will end up, some people would rebarrel and restock right away, some guys would leave it alone, nice to see all these opinions.

odd coment from a guy with 1220 posts on CGN :)
