What to do with sporter Nagant

Well, yesterday I was offered a sporterized nagant for $50 bucks, so what the hell, I bought it. Its a complete mismatched 1937 Tula with a roughish looking bore. Chopped wood, chopped barrel. Some aftermarket blade style front sight added on.

Since I would never sporterize a rifle myself, or pay much for a sporter, I thought this would be a rare opportunity for myself to play around with a bubbad rifle. Since I didn't pay much for it, I also don't want to spend much modding it.

Any ideas what kind of interesting mods can be done for cheap/free and might make this a slightly less uninteresting rifle?

If it shoots fine. Id put a scope on it and try my luck @ a deer or moose with it.

If it shoots ok then keep it as a spare or a truck gun.

Or you can use it for spare parts and make your money back. A proper matching Mosin is 160 bucks in some places so it doesn't makes sense to drop cash into any restorations that would exceed that much.

That'd be the kind of rifle to teach yourself checkering etc on. Anything other than perhaps scoping it(good training rifle for that too) wouldn't be cost effective.
Boyd's does list pretty stocks for all the assorted Mosin models, but they run $99US(about $123.23 Cdn).

Well ....... since you asked........drill & tap it for a scope & get rid of any/all iron sights...... give it a tactical spray paint job LOL & a kydex adjustable cheek riser would be a good start! OH....Oh..... thread the muzzle for a FNC1 flash hider! You could router out the center of the butt stock for a pseudo Dragunov look ..... might need a screw on cheek riser on the top then? Add an extended rubber butt pad to increase the length of pull (if necessary)
As you can see.... I too have been looking for an opportunity to release my inner Bubba but as of yet have not found the appropriate outlet (victim!).

I would test it first. If it still groups decently then I'd begin the modifications. The ATI stock sits around $100 and would suit this better than the partial original.

Well, Its beyond saviour without a serious financial investment, which doesn't make sense as these sub $200 guns in full military config in good shape. I think I'll either:
1. just leave it exactly as is and use a range beater, truck gun kind of thing
2. remove iron sights and add a no-gunsmith scope mount and throw an old cheap scope on it
3. Use it as a guinea pig for various things ( stock refinishing, drlling/tapping, bluing etc)

Just getting some ideas from CGN guys about stuff that can be done free or very cheaply to a gun like this to make it into a sort of fun bubba rifle.

You can always find a youngster who wants to get into shooting or hunting and give them a generous ( to them) start on their new hobby. It would be something they would never forget.

Hmm, yeah maybe I'll look for a carbine stock for it and make it into a sort of carbine clone. If that doesn't pan out, I think I might take your advice, Fiddler, and give it to a young guy I hunt with in a couple months when he turns 18. I'm sure he would love it and use it/ appreciate it a heck of a lot more than I will.

dont laugh, I have one in .308 and whack a pile of grouse with it during the deer season. its quieter than a standard velocity 22.

If it was mine, I would file the rear sight notch to a square, like a pistol rear sight, si it would be faster and easier to use. Then I would zero it and leave it as is as a beater/loaner.

I always take a similar rifle with me as a back up and more than once it got used by someone.

Or if it shoots well, stick it in an archangel stock with a 10 round mag and put a scope on it with a bipod and get a gilly suit and lay on the floor at yur local range and creep the other shooters out. Maybe the range guy will come over and give yu crap. Could be an entertaining day.

I was only joking. I've got no interest in modifying a mosin. I would give it to the young hunter. The 7.62 x 54r is a great cartridge, and will drop anything in North America.
