Maybe we could start a band...

When I was a kid in highschool, we had a visit from a military band. They set up on the stage in the gym to put on a very good performance for us.

It was one of those promotional things in the mid sixties to get students to consider enlistment after graduation of grade 12. Highly stressed by the way.

Anyway they were all dressed up in red surge uniforms and blue pants etc and played all kinds of music, from classical to popular current hits. We were all very appreciative and had a good time.

About half way through the program, it was mentioned that they were playing a couple of instruments that would only give them high pitched sounds. We were asked if we knew what the instruments were. There were a few attempts to identify them after they were played by themselves, but to no avail.

The instruments were brought out and revealed as rifles. Looking back I can now indentify the rifles as a No1 mkIII and a P14 enfield.

They gave off tones very similar to but not in the same range as a coronet or bugle. Because of the rigidity of the barrels, it was difficult to get the neccessary reverberations to enhance the sound.

All in all quite a surprise and very entertaining.
