What to do with these rifles??

My 2 main hunting rifles are a Sako AV in 8mm Rem Mag with a Mcmillan stock and Douglass stainless bbl and a Rem 700 stainless Syn in 300 SAUM, I don't know if i'm just wanting something new or if my reasoning makes sense but i'm considering selling the 2 of them and getting 1 main rifle that I could concentrate on that would do everything I need to do, I'm considering a Sako finnlight in 300 WSM, What would you guys do??

PS I do have other rifles that could act as back up if I decide to go to one rifle but it just seems like these 2 kinda overlap a bit and i'm wondering what you guys would do.
 
In my opinion the 8mm RM is in a different class than the SAUM/WSM, but that's just me. Why not ditch the SAUM and use the $ for a high end scope for the 8mm?
 
I don't know what you're hunting over there, moose probably, but if I were you I'd hang to the one I like the best, or carry the most. Sell the other and get a smaller caliber rifle for deer. Maybe a 25-06,260 or a 270, something along those lines. Or, if you want a short light deer rifle that'll do for moose, get a Model Seven in a 7-08 or 308.
 
I hunt moose and black bear, but we don't have a deer season yet.

I also have a 375 H&H, a guide gun in 45-70 and a 6.5-284 in a fairly light rifle so it's just the "GO-TO" rifle that i'm wondering about.
 
the 8mm makes a statement.
The SAUM is what everyone and their dog has.
The above statement is just what it is, not meant to be ofensive to people that own Ultramags.

Unless the SAUM is something else on the rifle scale - wich I doubt - I'd stick with the 8mm. The math says you need the 30 for the extra long shots on moose, covering the gap between the 375 and the 6.5 . However, the extra long shots are not as often in N ON and the the 8mm would look nicer.

sell them both and put the money towards one awesome 'all purpose' hunting rifle, like a custom 300 mag or similar

I think I've decided to keep the 8mm and maybe get it coated, it has a 22" bbl which seems funny in this caliber and bugs me a bit but it carries very good and even with the lost velocity it still packs enough punch, now by selling the Remmy it will free up some funds, so what would you guys add to the gun locker? I have the guns mentioned above plus a few shotguns, some 22's and a 22-250 and a AR180B, do you guys see anything missing and what would you add? (I know i'm overthinking this but i'm curious and bored)
 
A big bore that throws bowling balls at slow speeds -- a 405 Winchester, or a 416 Rigby, or a 404 Jeffrey, or a 505 Gibbs. You've got everything else covered. Go big or stay at home. :D :cool: :p

Ooops! Didn't see the 45-70. Sorry. :redface: But even so, get something that is high in the cool factor, and any of the above is high in the cool factor. Cool factor and drool factor. :)

Choice of gun

You seem to have everything pretty well covered except for a couple of calibers that I would recommend.

1. I would look at a 35 Whelen caliber - few models available but some customs guns can be found. Your assortment of calibers is never complete unless you have one of these. This caliber was designed for all North American big game and comes in a standard non-magmum action (can be reloaded using 30-06 shells)

2. A 338 WM - lots of choices but you might not like the recoil (less than the 375H&H).

My favorite caliber for moose hunting is a 300 WM (I have 4 of them - Sako, Tikka(2) and Browning)

Keep the 8mm and be happy. Your other option would be to rebarrel. You have a very good action and stock.

I wouldn't bother with the 300 WSM......it just isn't very good with the heavier bullets.

That is what I did.:p

I got a 300WSM custom rifle built by Bill Leeper, it's very accurate and more important, very reliable.

The 300WSM can handle bullets that will easily kill all of North Americas big game.

I initally felt compelled to go deeper into the .300 WSM vs the larger .300 magnums and their ability to launch the heavier .30 caliber bullets at higher velocities than the .300 WSM..........but then I suddenly realized it was a pointless waste of time and I couldn't be bothered. Must be getting old................:)
 
Your 8mm with a 22 inch barrel probably isn't much different in performance than your 300SAUM.... which isn't much different than a 300WSM.......

I'm not into the new short mags....... keep the 8mm and you should think about rebarreling it into something decent.....:)
