What to do with unknown powder?

Back to the anthill scenario.

I have found that ball [spherical] powders are best, due to their free-flowing characteristics.
However, fine grained extrudeds and flake are a close second.
Coarse extruded may not get down deeper where it does the most good.

I recollect after one larger hill was "treated" and the "wuff" was heard, that smoke ascended from my back lawn
in a circle almost a meter in diameter.

Shows how extensive some of these anthills are.
Sure got rid of them though.

I can only remember having to re-treat one anthill out of possibly 7 or 8.

It does the lawn no harm, except right at the opening to the hill, where there will be a bare spot 3-4" in diameter for a few weeks.

BTW, I would NOT reccommend using black powder for this endeavor.

Regards, Dave.

Yes, been there, done that.
Many anthills have succumbed to powder charges here - the little screams......
Anyhow, found myself with a little black one day - immediate divot.
Stick with smokeless, and light with a BBQ lighter or weed torch.
Step back if wearing sandals......

If the anthills were not so close to the house I'd try it lol

Why not black powder??

In the grand scheme of things, there's very little difference between a well burnt-out anthill and a crater... Ants are still gone, either way!

use it as seasoning like a real man:evil: lol.

BP I might take a pinch of, but god knows what is in smokeless.
Anyway, that could take a long time to consume as a seasoning, and what added torque might it give to a chili the next day?

This may sound silly, but it is a fantastic way to eliminate ants in your lawn, etc.

I usually wait until a warm day when the ants have the burrows open.
Then I pour powder down there until no more will go in.

Then I light it up......Flames will blow out the entry holes, and if enough got deep down in, there will follow a substantial "wuff!!" as the powder down deep ignites.

This will kill all the subterranean ants, usually including the queen, eliminating the hill.

Regards, Dave.

Would you say that a fast burner like Win 748 would be a better ant killer than Win 760. I have some varget and reloder 22 as well to choose from. FS

"...just throw it into water..then dump...flush...etc..." Does poisoning the water come to mind?
Fire is fun, but not if you live in a city. Scares the constabulary. Smokeless powder is very high in nitrogen. It'll make your grass grow like dog poop does.

Ha! I love the ant hill strategy. I've got this enormous ant hill on my lawn. If I pour enough powder into it, I could likely blow up a couple trees along with it. The neighbour wants them cut down anyway.

Back when smoking was permitted in bars, I would put a tiny pinch in the ashes in the bottoms of the ashtrays when no one was paying attention. Just enough to sparkle a little when someone would put there butt in it. Many confused looking people.

Oh boy, I hope we have an ant nest in the lawn. G:
