I'm looking to buy a new hunting rifle (300cal)
Steyer pro hunter is one i'm interested in? Any opinions on the gun?
What would you buy with a $1500 limit

A stainless Remington 700 SPS and a good quality scope. Save the rest and put it towards a hunting trip.

Depending on what you intend to hunt..vermin...deer...elk...moose? Why buy a gun to kick your shoulder off. To cover all bases an all round caliber is 270...IMHO. Others may want more "boom"...

If you are thinking of a Steyr you might want to shoulder one before deciding. To me they definitely have a different feel to them than any other rifle. That's just personal taste though. When you say 30 cal though are you looking for a magnum or no? As in .300WM or 308?
