I've never hunted before and have done target shooting lots I've just recently done my pal and want to start getting into hunting since a small kid it's what I've always wanted to do. I like the balistics of the .270 round I was also looking at remigton 700s this will be my first hunting rifle so any help would be great. I was thinking of using a milsurp rifle but for a good quality one being around 500 used who knows what I'd be getting into I want something out of the box good and easy to be versital.

Is $500 your budget? What do you want to hunt? Coyotes, deer, bears, moose, elk??? Do you live east or west of Manitoba?

WS; Weatherby Vanguard S2 has a very good reputation on this board and it is less than $500. now. It won't be after the sale and probably not in the future with the weak $. Search on this forum for Vanguard and you'll see what I mean. Good luck.

You say you have done lots of target shooting, with what gun and cartridge? Familiarity is a good thing... and some idea of the recoil you are used to would help.

Off the top, I would recommend a quality bolt action... take a look at the Ruger Hawkeye All-Weather rifles, a medium cartridge such as; 7mm-08, .280, .308, .30/06 will work well... try to pick up your gun on the used market (EE and other online vendors or your LGS) in excellent condition for around $700-750, and spend the rest on a Leupold VX-2 3-9X40mm. This is a set-up you won't ever have to sell and will not regret owning.

Hoytcanon has it nailed. You can get a lot of rifle for your money on the EE. Who knows, Ted may be selling another of his treasures. And don't skimp on glass...quality glass will last many lifetimes. Buy once, cry once.

I've been looking into the weatherby it's what I'm looking for .270 cal I've shot 30-30 , 5.56 , 9 mm, 308 for rifles now they make a stainless and a regular is there any upside beside weather resistant to a point. I'm gonna go with a synthetic stock as well . I want the .270 because it's flat shooting round it's not as big as some of the other calibers but should do the trick for what I want.

You're on the right track. If you don't reload though have a look at the 308 being that its a military round and used in ARs there's cheap full metal jacket ammo available in bulk, not for hunting ammo but for practice. And its a good hunting round with proper bullets.

I kind of have my heart set on a .270 i know ammo would be cheaper in various other calibers. Just over all what i have read about the round it suites my needs perfectly. I do like the weatherby vanguard 2 i haven't read or heard any real complaints about it. If anyone has any other models i should have a look at feel free to point me that way but it has to be .270 cal.

Don't let anyone (other than Douglas) tell you that the 270 is a bad choice.

The 270 is a horrendous choice...........buy a 280 Rem, 6.5X55, 264 WM much better than a 270, 7X57, 7X64, 7-08.........anything but a 270 !!!! Now seriously consider this.......a 7mm RM, outstanding ballistics, ammo every bit as popular as the 270 and not usually much more money, recoil almost the same, not enough more so one would even notice, way better selection of bullet weights in factory ammo, way more suitable cartridge for elk sized game, or moose, or grizzly..........The 7mm Rem mag is so superior to the 270 Win that I could go on for 15 paragraphs......seriously OP give the big 7 some serious thought, a lot more bang for your buck in any conceivable situation.

I would even be willing to help you in your quest IF you were to change your mind and consider a 7mm RM.......

Well what's the main diffrence between the 7 and the .270 also 22" barrel or the 24" the weatherby kryptek is what I'm looking at right now. It works out to a .284 cal so not a huge diffrence are there any fmj in 7mm this way I can shoot that at the range? I've never really looked into 7mm or shot it.

no no no, don't listen to Douglas, he is a hard boiled egg, the word recoil isn't even in his vocabulary! He really doesn't know what it is! I sold two rifles in 7mag do to hefty helpings of recoil. Ok ok, so call me a candy azz, I am what I am! OP, you have your heart set on a 270, go for it, you won't be disappointed. And as the big guy said, go with quality, buy it once and cry once.
Look at the X-bolt, Tikka T3, A7 and the others that have been mentioned, and above all, be sure to top it with a Leupold.
