what to grease and what to oil

Hey guys , Just wondering what components to grease and what to oil. Wheter it is a semi auto , lever action , bolt action or break open. What to do and what not to do. I'm just a little confused on the subject.

If it moves, it gets an EVER SO THIN coating of synthetic grease (locking lugs on a bolt, rails and mating surfaces in semis and levers). Nothing gets oiled, just protected with G96.

what do you mean nothing gets oiled? I'never greased any of my firearms. I just clean them with solvent the put a coat of oil over everything then whipe it off.

I find it's mostly personal preference. Some guys grease, some guys oil. The only gun I grease is my M14.

Grease is generally used with heavy pressure, or where you want the lubrication to stay. Oil is used for light duty moving parts, or to provide a protective layer on other steel parts.

I grease the back of the recoil lugs on the bolt to prevent galling and use a light application of synthetic oil for everything else except the trigger which I spray down with lighter fluid s couple times a year to clean out any crud.

Lots of good advice, I also agree with the grease for high pressure areas and a very light coating or wipe down of oil on the rest except the inside of the barrel. Be careful if you are hunting at low temperatures when applying grease because it tends to slow down any moving part and this can affect reliability.

Barrel and chamber must operate dry, ammo must be dry. Otherwise it will cook and will not be good.

As for oil vs grease.
I like to use oil only to the trigger part, oil on m14 receiver use to spill on my glass wich i dont really enjoy.
