What to hunt with, what to bring?

Going up to Region 3 in B.C. deer hunting for the first time this season on Friday.

Can't choose between my 1955 vintage 7x57 Husqvarna Lightweight 4100 with a Leupy 4X or my new to me custom 280 in a Brno 98 action, plastic stock topped with a 3x9 Bushnell 3200 Elite.

That 7x57 is lighter by at least a pound and my favourite packing around rifle, but I've never shot anything with that 280 yet and I like the idea of the 3x9 on it. It is noticeably heavier for ground pounding through the trees though.

I would take them both. I would hunt with the light rifle and admire the other one at night

If I'm out for the day within reach of home I take the rifle I want to use. If I'm going far enough away that I'm staying away from home, I take another rifle in case one goes wrong. Sounds to me like you should take both and let them take turns.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I think I'll save the plastic handled 280 for the Roosevelt elk trip to the Island. It's gonna be wet.

You might find yourself making a longer shot in region 3, my son shot a nice 3 point there during the junior season at about 200 yards...and it could've been at over 300 yards in the same clear cut. For that reason I'd go with the rifle that has the 3-9X scope on it.

I'm back. No deer were harmed but it was a great trip.

Seeing as I was hunting in the timber, leaving the roads and clearcuts to the road hunters, I would have been fine with my 30-30 Winchester Model 94, but it was nice to have my little Husqvarna. With that short barreled bot action it makes it really easy to walk through little thickets of trees, over and under windfalls.

"You got an Island Draw?, Lucky Dog! "

My buddy did. I'll bring my rifle for deer.
