What to look for buying Savage 99s

Watch for cracks at the tang, this is common in rifles that have not had the tang correctly relieved. On rotary magazine models, ensure that the cartridge counter is properly indexed to the rounds in the magazine, its a pain to correct. The older models that have the safety on the lever can have miserable triggers, and not much can be done to improve them, I understand those rifles with a tang safety tend to have better, if more complex, triggers.

Killed 3 deer with my 99 in 300 savage last year from 20 yards to 200 with iron sights. Did a full resto on it and it can group 5 shots into an inch at 100 yards. My favourite gun by far.

As stated tang cracks are the biggest thing to look for, alot also have the rear sight missing from people putting scopes on them.

Have 3 99s, prefer them over remingtons or marlins

Does anyone know who might work on 99's? A buddy gave me mine and it's a little worse for ware. Front bead looks slightly bent off canter, rings were installed a bit off as well so when I went to test fire it, couldn't even see my shot placement. With TLC I know I would love that rifle, but lever actions are FAR above my tinkering capabilities.

It’s actually a very easy gun to work on. There are like 10 parts outside of the bolt. I did make 5 dummy rounds to perfect feeding from the rotary mag. I even made my own bluing bath for refinishing the barrel and action.**Image and video linking functions will be enabled after you have contributed more to the forum**[/IMG]

Mad dog is the resident Savage 99 expert around here, I have only one. It's a 1966 DL in .308, and it's generally more accurate than I am. Mine has the tang safety, which is important to me as a southpaw, no rear sight, as stated above, it wears a Leupold 3-9 AND had sling swivels installed prior to my ownership (Sacrilege!). Its my main squeeze for sure.

Lever safety, make sure it works.
Did a deal awff'ear years ago and dang gun wuzz plump wore out.
Safety dint work, live rounds left in chamber when unloading.
Ohh, it wuzz heavanly.
