What to look for in a new Marlin

If the Barrel is stamped Illion, New York you should be good to go with a simple over-the-counter inspection. If the barrel is stamped North Haven , Connecticut you will need to do a better inspection. Look at how the wood fits the metal there should be no gaps, Cycle the lever, it should not be gritty or bind up in anyway. There's another issue but I don't know how you could check it in the store, I had bought a Marlin and the chamber wasn't not was not machined properly, When firing a round the case would expand or bulge making it almost impossible to work the lever to extract the empty case. I sent that rifle back along with a nice letter expressing my displeasure and within a week I had a flawless new rifle Sent to me.

You can have confidence buying one from Epps. I bought a GBL from them, and at the time they were going through every Marlin they put on the shelf to make sure it was up to standard. Or so I was told.

So I went up to Epps today and all they seemed to have in stock were New Haven... It seemed fine, action cycled nice, everything looked good with the exception of the sights, the rear leaf is quite a bit off centre, I bought it anyways because I have no intentions of using iron sights. What would be a good scope to put on the .45-70? also has to be economical too if possible.

I put a a fixed 4X Leupold on my Marlin 1895. Only problem I had was needing some shims under the Leupold scope mount to sight it in. These were provided for free.
