Permethrin works. I've been turkey hunting and had 150+ ticks in one day. The next week wearing Permethrin on my pants I had 4. I considered it a major win. That was the worst year I've experienced. Most times I'll have one at most.

DEET on light coloured long sleeve shirts and pants.
Tuck your shirt in, sleeves rolled down when bush bashing.
Blouse your pants into your socks.
Wear a light colour, broad brim hat that you can spray with DEET.

In my area ticks are only seen from when the snow melts until the grass turns green, I've never seen one in the fall. We take our cloths off on the porch, check for ticks, then throw the cloths in the washing machine. If we find a tick attached we put it in a container with alcohol, date it and put it in the freezer.
