I just sanded out a barrel channel in a wood stock to free-float a barrel then discovered that my can of spar varnish is old and separated.

I have some Lee Valley tung oil and polymerized tung oil.

Can I use that or should I go get a small can of varnish?

I'd attempt to use the same finish that currently on the stock. The tung oil will work just fine however you'll need a 3-4 coats to seal the wood. Ron

The very best channel sealer is varathane cut 50% with varathane thinner, apply 3 or 4 coats over 3 or 4 evenings and you'll never have to worry about it taking on or dispelling moisture.

I am a Flecto-Varathane fan... get the exterior finish... No. 66 Oil Finish is my favorite (it was for my stock making instructor 51 years ago too) ... You don't need to thin it down, it is quite runny... like Doug said - 3 or 4 coats over 3 or 4 evenings...
