Okay guys help me out here, looking for a rifle to start shooting a little more accurately. Must be 308, probably the most I will shoot is 300-500 yards. Would like something I can use now and be happy with but could add a better barrel and have some work done later.

My 2 picks right now are the Remington 700 sps tactical and the sps varmint.....

Is there a better choice of the two?

Is there something better in the same price range?

Thanks.

Neither one will shoot any better than the other so it comes down to what suits YOU the best.

I am not up to snuff on the differences between the varmint and the tactical (stock and or available calibers maybe?) but if one has a feature that floats your boat then go with that choice.

Weight

Which would you recommend if going savage?

Not really sure what your intended uses are other than the distance you mentioned. Weight is a big consideration if you are going to walk any distance and carry the rifle. If it's just for range shooting then weight is not that important unless you plan on doing lots of off hand shooting. Cheers
Check Savage's web site and look at there model 12 lineup and also the 10's, I have a 12 BVSS in .223 and it shoots great but I would not want to pack it to far.

Just talked to Phil at p&d. He suggested the 5r remington mil spec 308. My question is, will I say one day wow sure glad I spent 400 more on this 5r?

I handload and shoot 100-300 mostly. All range no bush, maybe 500 if I get to the other range.

What to do?

I have the 5R. Awesome

I have a Savage .308 and I always reach for the 5R. The action is way smoother and the entire rifle has more substance. The Savage is good, the Remington is great. There is a price difference and I'm glad I paid it.

yup savage or rem will both be accurate.
or just change your current rifle with match grade barrel.
will cost around $500-800.
but then savage wil lbe cheaper then barrel and rem will be around the same price as the new barrel.
1 modded gun or 2 guns! your choice i guess lol

The Savages tend to shoot really well out of the box. Some guys get right horny over the 5R because of the added term "Milspec" which really gets some guys whipped into a lather. I doubt that you'll find much difference. My Savage shot extremely well out of the box and has a 1-10" twist which is better for heavy bullets favoured by LR shooters. Since you're stickign to 500 max (at this point) it may not be critical but you might as well have the flexibility. My LE2B has given me several groups in the sub-MOA range and a few sub 1/2 MOA. That's pretty darned good with a factory rifle, out of the box and one of the first handloads I worked up. I'm planning to give the 208 AMax a go with Vihtavuori N550 to see how much better they do for real LR shooting. Theoretically they should add about 400 yards of supersonic flight over the 168 and 100" less wind drift (given a full value 10 MPH wind). Definitely worth trying.
