What to upgrade to???

Out of the box, Tikka's are very hard to beat, if you can get over the plastic trigger guard/magazine. I've got one and the action is so smooth it's like it's on ball bearings. Haven't done anything to upgrade it and the thing is a tack driver.

If you were looking to possibly upgrade components in the future, I'd suggest the Remington 700... Been around for a long time and a great base to customize if your so inclined in the future.

As for a calibre there ain't nothing wrong with the '06! It's one of the most common rounds available and there's a good reason for it. You'll be able to take most anything in North America if you do your part with shot placement. .300 Win Mag will only mean more recoil pushing the same bullet faster. 7mm Rem mag is around the same recoil as the '06, only pushing a smaller bullet faster with a flatter projectory.

Later on pick up a .270 for deer and a .338 Win Mag for the bigger animals and your set!

I usually start by picking a cartridge first, then see what's available from the manufacturers - and the "which cartridge is better" pissing matches just annoy
me. As stated by so many others, if you don't reload then the 30-06 is the way to go. Then should you decide to get into reloading, the 30 cal has by far the
largest selection of bullet weights and types of any caliber. If you do reload, then you already know this. Should you choose the 30-06, then you will definitely
have the largest selection if rifles available to you, so you would then have the unenviable task of visiting the various gun shops to look at and handle all the
rifles that interest you to see what suits you best - oh you poor bugger, you really do have my sympathy. As for which make and model you should
choose: If it feels good, do it.:) As for the cartridge, like so many before me have stated: "They all put holes in things", it's the adjustment of the nut behind
the trigger that determines if the hole is in the right spot. Enjoy the hunt.

I just bought a Savage 116 in 30-06. I finished siting it in this morning and shot one 3 rnd group at 200yds with Hornaday Superperformance 165s that measured 2". I had two groups that measured 2 3/8". My scope is a $90 Bushnell 1.75-4.75X. The recoil pad is nice and soft; offhand shots are quite gentle recoil wise. In the prone position after a couple of dozen shots you start to feel it, but not bad enough to flinch. $749 Accutrigger/Accustock with bolt release ahead of the trigger guard.
