Yeah, I'd love one of those. I also hear someone in the US makes a 92 in 500 S&W.

The thing is, they're not T.Rex. They can be mean, but so can bears, moose, deer, even turkeys have been known to attack. I have no doubt that the 44 mag. would also have been plenty. I think it's important to be able to get off a fast 2nd or 3rd shot if a serious social situation arises.

I agree....... and the "legend" surrounding hogs charging is likely due to their bad eyesight........

The guy at the ranch says it's instinctive to charge their aggressor. I have no way of knowing if it's true or not. The 2 I have taken so far were both bang-flops. One through the heart with a Horandy LeverEvolution 325 gr., this week's with a Hornady 350 gr. RN handload, through the head. Both made about a 2-3" exit hole.

not the eyesight nor a legend ... behavior is the correct answer ... every year we had 5-10 dogs to be baddly stiched and 1-2 on average killed by boar.s we had in 5 years only 3 guys attacked with minor injuries, but the neighbourood hunting association had 3 killed in 15 years by boar ...

I think perhaps I should expand on my earlier reply here. If you are out to bring down just one specific boar in a single outing, one or two well placed shots will suffice just fine.
However, if you come across a little band of them in a foul mood at bad breath distance unexpectedly, yes more quick shots in reserve, gives one a warm and fuzzy.
In my own personal case only, an unplugged 4 shot Ithaca (+1) in a well proven Deerslayer gives this fella plenty of bloodletting confidence.

YMMV

That's my experience as well on my last boar hunt. After placing a good kill shot into the boiler room with a 44 magnum at about 30 yards, it turned towards me and charged. I gave it 2 more shots aiming at the head as it was running towards me and it then slowed and turned. One more to the head and it dropped. After review I noticed that the 2 shots when it was charging hit the upper part of both front legs and the damn thing still kept coming. I've shot a fair amount of large game and was quite surprised by this guy charging. I was certainly not expecting that.

Good feedback Phil...... I wasnt taking into account the European tradition of hunting them with dogs.....

I certainly don't dispute their foul temperment......

It's all a question of perspective, too. Don't forget, having been married for 39 years to date, and raised 3 daughters (and a son), I'm an expert in dealing with foul temperaments. :)

This is the one - 269 lbs. on the hoof. 1 shot through the head - better than Prozac. (I had rotated the pic in Photobucket. Don't know why it came out that way). Boy, the boomstick looks like a toy. I guess looks can be deceiving as the hog found out!
