What to use to clean mosin metal parts

What's the general consensus on cleaning mosin metal parts. I've seen carb cleaner, brake cleaner and other suggestions. Just wondering what is the best cosmoline remover and least damaging

I've had great luck with mineral spirits, not so good in the house tho!

I used some diluted Simple Green when I did mine. Seemed to work well enough and hasn't appeared to have damaged it.

Cosmoline melts at 45–52 °C so all you really need to do is pour boiling water down / over the parts.

I use Ed's Red , and I spin a .410 brush in the chamber a few times. Take it out of the wood first.

Varsol, then blow it out with compressed air. Hot water if its fired corrosive ammo.

First thing I did when I got it home was to strip it and put boiling water down the barrel You guys rock!

Got some of this in a kit, will have to give it a try

Zep heavy duty citrus degreaser and some hot water works well also for removing cosmoline. It's cost effective and won't make the house stink. I've done 3 sks like this and it works well.

WD40 does a great job removing the cosmoline. Pretty much everyone has a can kicking around.

I have used mineral spirits as well with great effect (cuts the cosmoline instantly). Unfortunately as another poster said it stinks up the house and can overwhelm you with the fumes! I always have a fan blowing and the window open when I use it. Outdoors would be a much better setting to use it.

I'm guessing after using gas or varasol that you'd have to use soap and water afterwards wouldn't you? Same would go for wd40? Then dry and oil?

I used Boiling Water and Simple green. Then finished off with bore cleaner and oil...

VARSOL all the way. It leaves nothing greasy and It's dirt cheap !
