I'm looking to upgrade the trigger in my 700P, just wondering what you guys prefer.

And is it a simple install, or is it something I should let the gunsmith do?

Qualified 'smiths' can rework your factory 700 trigger to be very crisp and safe at settings as low as 2 pounds for as little as $50. US aftermarket triggers will be 3 times or more than that...

I'll say it depends on your budget and what plans you have for the rifle long term.

If you want to keep it under $200 then I'd say it might be worth getting on the prebuy for these new Trigger Tech's. Sounds like a guy should have the trigger in his hands by the beginning of June. I've been doing some reading and people really rave about their crossbow triggers. Nothing but good reviews from those customers.
*GP Tactical running pre-buy, haven't looked at other dealers yet.

If you are in the $300 market, then I'd recommend looking at the Jewell Rem 700 HVRTS. Great trigger and many, many people will recommend it. Can't go wrong with that guy.
*Mystic Precision can hook you up.

Far end of the spectrum, pricey... but I like to over do it from time to time :) You have triggers like the X-treme Mod 22 tac (2 stage). Very nice feel and adjustable from every angle.
*Order online from X-treme Shooting Products

I just installed the Mod 22 on a 700 and wow! It's one of those things that I probably didn't need but it is a confidence booster.

ETA: Installs: There really isn't much to installing a trigger on a 700. I haven't had any custom fitting to do on the 3 that I have installed. You basically pull off your stock, drift out two pins, keep bolt stop and spring, line up new trigger assembly along with bolt stop and spring then drift original pins back in. Setting the actual trigger mechanism can be tricky on some since you need to balance sear and spring adjustments sometimes but there are plenty of great videos out there to aid you.
Finally, re-install stock and torque screws.

Tools req'd: Small hammer, small straight punch (around 3/32"), allen keys (most triggers come with these), and torque driver (for action screws torque 45ft/lbs for 700P factory stock.. i went to 55 without damage)

I was hoping to keep it in the $200 price range.

I'm also quite impatient so waiting till June might be difficult. Plus I'm always weary of buying brand new products that are untested.

I was looking at Timney, the seem to fall under $200. Anybody vouch for them?

It's going into a 700p in .308. My goal is to eventually shoot it at 1000 yards.

I've only played with a couple rifles briefly that had the Timney's and it's an improvement over stock for sure. They won't set as crisp or light as the Jewell's but they are $100 cheaper.

Rifle Basix is another.
I've been using mine, set at 8oz, for about 4 years. It's as crisp and clean as when it was new.

If you're shooting in dirty conditions, stay away from the Jewel. Great trigger for range use, but it's not a good field trigger. Mine has failed on numerous occasions and now lives on a trainer rifle. Had numerous instances of failures to #### over the winter just from the cold weather. Always have a bottle of lighter fluid with me when using it.

I would also look at Cadex's new trigger and the CG Xtreme trigger if you like 2 stage. Have both of those triggers on order.

Options currently Timney, Rifle Basix, Jewell, ... Some on the wall, some waiting on backorders. Just depends on when you want, what trigger pull you want and how much you want to spend.

Trigger Tech will get tested and if it works out, become a dealer. Sorry, not taking preorders until I can prove the trigger works to my liking. I may be late at the party but triggers are something I am very fussy about.

Like k has indicated, Jewell is my goto for range work. Timney, Rifle basix for field work. At this time, the Timney Calvin Elite is the best compromise for light pull and field useability. I do like the set up on the CE triggers.

All costs have jumped with the falling dollar. Trigger Tech is now the best price... but you will be in for a wait.

Or send to Guntech... He knows a few things about them Rem triggers and does excellent work.

YMMV.

Rifle Basix. I have 2 and not only are they great triggers but their customer service is excellent. My own fault, I had the trigger in and out of a stock I was working on and a retaining cir clip went for a ride somewhere along with a spring. I contacted them and they sent me 2 (not 1 but 2) repair kits free of charge, then contacted me to make sure the install went ok. Couldn't be happier and I think they're under your $200 limit. Contact them personally and if you want, they'll pre set the trigger weight you want. Best of luck with your choice. (Rifle Basix)

I have one like this and really like it.

Honestly for price the best thing to do is to get the factory one worked on by someone who (like Guntech ) knows the trigger. Another cost-effective proposition is to by and self install the Timney 510 - not the best trigger but a certain improvement over the XMP.
