Silly question .. but the Smith and Wesson website only say's to feed the M&P9 9mm ammo. Their instruction book (read in detail) only says to use the proper ammo for your perticular firearm ...

I am new to shooting (6 months only) and even less with pistols (never owned one before last week) .. so by 9mm, are they refering to the 9mm Luger?

Sorry if this is a really really stoopid question, but even if its common knowledge, I would have thought that S/W would actually say somewhere the exact type of 9mm to put into this gun.

Yes...9mm Luger also known as 9x19 Parabellum

There are other not very common 9mms as well. 9mm short, 9mm kurtz, 9mm long, 9x17, 9x18, 9mm ultra, 9mm police and probly a few others that Ive missed. Most of these are still available however not very common.

Usually when referring to 9mm you are referring to 9mm Luger which is what most handguns (but not all) 9mms are manufactured in today.

Hope this helps.

I've got a M&P in 40 S&W but I thought the manual did say more specifically that it was 9mm Para.

9mm, 9x19, 9mm Parabellum, 9mm Luger are all the same. (shields UP!)

Here is the Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9mm_Para

It is the most common 9mm calibre. There are others such as 9x21, 9x17, and 9mm Short (Kurz) but it is mostly known in North America as 380 ACP. And many more wildcats.

If you just go to the store and ask for 9mm. They will likely just assume you want 9mm Para as it is by far the most common.

And it's not a "stoopid" question... maybe a "stupid" question but not stoopid. :p

"...are they refering to the 9mm Luger?..." Yep. Or 9mm Parabellum or 9mm x 19mm.
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

I have found that the 9mm is the one that causes new shooters the most confusion.

There are so many different 9mm's. Once you are involved in shooting for a while, you know but at the beginning it can be difficult.

At least most new shooters are smart enough to ask.
