Hey guys,

I was wondering what type of bases you guys prefer on your model 700's, short actions in particular. This is on a hunting, rather than a target rifle. DO you guys go single piece, or two-piece?

Cheers, Stef

Personally, I usually go with two piece Weaver bases #36 rear; #35 front on a short action or #36 rear; #40A [extension base] front on a long action Rem 700. However, I never use standard Weaver rings. I prefer Burris "Z" rings or B-Square Lynx steel rings for Weaver bases. I find medium rings work well with scopes with a 40mm objective bell on the front.

That set-up works well to get the best eye relief out of any given scope you choose. [Some scopes have shorter tubes than others].

Sometime I will use Leupold bases & rings [either one piece base or two piece bases] if the rifle already comes with them installed.

Talleys. all I'll use now, they're simple, strong, and weigh next to nothing. I like the spartan/utilitarian look to them.

I do like the Warne bases/rings as well, but being solid steel they are rather heavy.

I like and use the Leupold mounts and rings. I have never had an issue with them. Get them square and tight and they stay that way.

I used to use Leupold dual dovetails, switched to talleys lightweights on everything except my 8mm Mag which I use Talley base & talley quick detach rings

I am also fond of the Leupold PRW rings on a steel weaver base.

I use either Talleys or a Weaver type base system.

In some ways I prefer the Weaver system to the Talleys as the "low" Talley really isn't that low and a good aluminum Weaver ring and base is just as light as a Talley.

My gunsmith has EAW swing off mounts on all his guns, several of them Rem 700s. They are a phenominal mount. You can swap out scopes in an instant, or take your scope off at any time in a second. They are adjustable for elevation and windage. And they look very classy. They are not cheap, but I think they are about the nicest system I have seen.

I'm a big talley fan, the only issue with them sometimed is getting the scope far enough forward if the scope has a big eye piece and lots of eye relief.
