The ruger mk2 target is a nice affordable rifle and it has a 2 stage trigger which I like. Mine in 22-250 groups nicely. Downside to the 22-250 is you can't really see your hits even with a gun this heavy.
If you reload any 22 cf will work. A 222 is known for accuracy,a 223 is only cheap if you use fmj, a 22 hornet is just plain fun. In MHO if you plane to shoot coyotes around here a 243 is the way to go (too much $$ for gophers)
Ammo and reloading components would be slightly more difficult to come by, but it would certainly be a unique gun, with approximately the same ballistics as the 22 Hornet.
I've always thought the 5.7x28 would be a perfect little varmint caliber in a rifle, and I'm a bit of a sucker for unique cartridges and firearms, so I'll probably end up with one of these rifles before they're discontinued.
My varmint rifle is a stevens 200 in 25-06. I got a 223 in winchester rifle as well but love the 25-06. But if I were to buy another rifle the hnr skeleton rifle in 22250 or a howa in a axiom stock in 243.
I'm partial to Savage rifles as they are good shooters at a decent price. I recently bought a Model 10 Predator Hunter Max-1 in .223 and I think it's going to be a really good rifle. The ability to swap barrels to accomodate another caliber is a plus also.
